Easier way to move files on external hard drive?

I have an HDD connected to MT6000 via USB port. When ever I want to move or copy a file from one folder on HDD to another folder, it first gets copied to my laptop and automatically back to the HDD.

Is there a way to NOT move the files through the laptop but directly copy or move files through the router it self?

Im using a Mac computer if that matters.

You can use SSH for that.

If we speaking of moving files on the router itself - yes.

Maybe SCP will work as well. Cyberduck would be a good client for that.
