Ethernet only setup not working?

I setup my Opal router with ethernet only and am having problems. I can access the admin panel via 192.168.8.1 so long as there is no ethernet cable plugged into the WAN port of my opal router. However then I can't browse the internet. As soon as I have my home network's ethernet cable plugged into the Opal router's WAN port ( and another ethernet cable plugged into the Opal router's LAN port and going into my laptop) I lose connectivity to the Opal router admin panel, and if my VPN is enabled, I can't access the internet either.

I grabbed the log of one such instance of this problem:

It seems you are using VLAN?

Am I? I don't remember enabling that anywhere. Forgive me, networking is not my strong suit. All I really know is that I have my ethernet cable plugged into my LAN port of my opal router and my laptop.

The log tells us that VLAN 2 is used.

You should check why this is the case - maybe check on the upper router?

VLAN isn't working out of the box.

as far as I can tell I don't have VLAN enabled. Apologies for my simplicity here, is there some way it's still enabled despite what my home router login portal says?

Hmm im looking to your opal log.

But also due to the packages i see such like openclash, did you install it?

And i also see mention of vlan use from the opal, since you are not aware as OP.

Did you buy it maybe from amazon?, and this was pre-installed in this state?

You may want to do a reset then

i will try installing openclash

Note that it should not be default installed.

The firmware of your opal is older than most recent routers so these still get shipped with shadowsocks.

But i cannot remember seeing it come with openclash/netclash or neither that it creates a vlan, unfortunately i haven't a opal so im not sure if the vlan is correct.

I just mentoin this, because i just noticed a small amount of topics about users buying gl-inet products from Amazon which had used settings by someone else

So after testing on 2 different laptops, this appears to be an OS related issue w.r.t. Ubuntu. I successfully ran the VPN on the router using only ethernet and was able to connect to my new IP address and browse the internet on both of my windows laptop, one of them the same laptop I'm using now but a different partition. Thank God since my work laptop is windows haha :joy: i will still try to figure out what the hell is causing this issue on the Ubuntu laptop though. Maybe I'll upgrade kernel and see if that helps
