Feature request - SIM performance comparison

Hi folks, I am using a gl-x2000 with sim cards from two different carriers.

At most locations, one sim will outperform the other in signal strength and/or internet speed.

Usually I will check signal strength and do a speed test to check the first sim, then change the active sim, wait the minute or so for it to register, then check signal strength and do another test.

Could there be a way to automate or streamline this process? So at a location I can just press a button and it chooses the best performing SIM?

Hi,

I think it is a good suggestion.

However, Internet speed tests may consume a lot of traffic.
If some customers are unaware of it, if the traffic is accidentally consumed after clicking the test, maybe some users may misunderstand.

We have relevant requirements records, tbh it is difficult to advance to implement.

Sorry Bruce can you describe what you mean here?

"Best performing" is somewhat subjective. For some people download speed may be most important, for others it could be upload speed and then some folks may be looking for the lowest latency connection. And to add to that, with cellular, results can vary from one test to another. I'm not saying it's a bad suggestion, just difficult to implement.

Use ping latency and / or use RSRQ.
But for this to work well you need two radios.

Swapping SIMs just to check takes way too long and you could be swapping into one that doesn't work.

I think doczenith1 and Shannon given good explanations, this requirement is not complicated, just may difficult to implement.

I have plugged in a Teltonika TRM200 into the USB port and the OS had recognised it as a tethering device.

Is there a way to compare the signal strength and upload/download speeds of the two internet sources without shifting their priority order in the multi-wan menu?

I think no, you have to switch to the WAN (Internet) source in Multi-WAN, so that during testing, you use the only WAN interface, and the test results correspond to the network speed of the only WAN port.

As for regards of data usage for doing a speed test, a warning can be provided next to the test buttons.

Then the regards for the best suggestion to use can instead just be two buttons, are you needing highest download speed or best low latency?

Having to manually switch between two different SIM cards installed to just play games or be ready to download a large file or game is tedious. If it was easy as just opening the router page, I'm intending to download something big in this new area I'm in, obviously have two different carrier SIM cards with very high data limits already, I want the best to download or the best for lowest latency available.

Thanks for your feedback!
I will continue to monitor this kind of request, if it becomes large, we will evaluate it with PM team.
