Flint 2 - 2.4G WiFi slow and WireGuard issue

This router is starting to really annoy me after coming from a rock solid Asus 86U. I would have to check the date, I purchased this, but both issues have been going on for months. (probably 5+ months)

First issue is that the 2.4 ghz spectrum randomly starts slowing down and drops devices on and off. Severly effects the funtionality of IoT devices like security cameras. Shut off and turn on WIFI, or reboot router, and it immediatly works perfectly full speed until it happens again.

Second issue the Wireguard client will stop responding (timeouts when connecting) even though I’m still getting updates from my cameras and I can connect to my server without VPN. It works again after the router reboots.

-I have reflashed the router several times and am now on the beta program but it hasn’t fixed either issue.

-The router reboots via smart outlet every night so these issues occur within a 24 hour period.

- 5Ghz and other router functions appear to work fine while either of the two issues are occuring.

-I have tried all the band changing advice on 2.4 but non of the settings have made a difference.

-I have two identical routers at work that don’t have the 2.4 ghz issue. (We don’t use Wireguard at work so can’t comment on that).

-It is very possible that these issues occur at the same time but the only times I notice the wireguard not working are the worst possible time: When I’m travelling with no ability to reboot. Unable to connect for work or personal right now.

-The Asus was hosting all the same local devices and never dropped 2.4 or VPN connectivity.

I’m starting to feel like this is either an unreliable router or I got a lemon. Any thoughts/recommendations would be appreciated.

Hmmm this sound like you use a very early firmware, can you tell which version?

if you still got issues on recent firmware have you tried op24 builds?

Its not recommend to keep the configuration between the two distinct different firmwares.

Op24 is a fork of OpenWrt 24.10.x with the official opensource wifi driver mt76 from OpenWrt while the default firmware is mediatek sdk much older OpenWrt base and kernel with it's private mediatek drivers.

Reminds me: Has usb being involved?

I’m travelling and Wireguard is still not working so I can’t tell you the versions. What I can tell you is around two weeks ago I was up to date with the latest stable release which was having the issue so I opted into the beta program and now have the most up to date version of that. Both firmwares have the same issue.

I have not installed Open WRT as I was hoping to stick with stock. I understand stock is built on Open WRT so it should work fine.

probably the best way to know what the issue is, is to save your current config. Update to 4.8.2op24 through local update (download from website). Factory reset. Setup with a few clicks and check if you still have issues. I know it can be annoying to do but otherwise you potentially might spend endless time troubleshooting. The other obvious area to look into are your wifi channel settings and your wifi environment.

If you have goodcloud enabled you can check versions there.

P.S. i have zero issues with this firmware, works flawless for me without having to reset anything, 24 wired/wireless devices and AP connected.

Hi

Regarding the Wi-Fi issue, could you please verify that the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi settings on your Flint 2 router match the settings on your working router?

Based on our experience, some IoT devices may have compatibility issues with WPA3 or a 40 MHz bandwidth.

If the settings already match and the issue continues, please provide us with the following information so we can investigate further:

  1. The brand and model of the specific IoT device that is experiencing the connectivity issue.
  2. The device logs after the issue happened. Please export the logs and send them to us in a private message.

Regarding the WireGuard issue, could you please SSH into the router via GoodCloud or another remote access method the next time the problem occurs?

Once you are connected via SSH, please run the following commands and share the full output with us.
These commands will provide us with essential information about your network configuration and the status of the WireGuard tunnel:

ip link show
wg show
netstat -anpl

After that, please try shutting down and restarting the WireGuard server to see if it resumes working.

This will help us confirm if the WireGuard server is genuinely not working or if the issue is a result of your ISP blocking WireGuard port incoming traffic after a certain data usage.

I was out of the country for 2 weeks but I will try this over the weekend.

For the 2.4 it is all devices that start having trouble connecting and when I do a speedtest it is below 1 mbps. Nothing to do with 20 or 40 Mhz as I tried both on their own. It just happened again today. Turned off 2.4 and back on and everything worked perfectly immediately. I will grab the logs.

In terms of the Wireguard when I’m logging in I’m attempting to work when I am remote. That makes it a very difficult environment to troubleshoot.

How do I send you a private message? When I try to click on your profile it just says it is hidden.

I have PM you a message so that you can send the log there.

Would you able to connect the Flint 2 to GoodCloud, so that we can remote troubleshoot via it?
Technical Support via GoodCloud - GL.iNet Router Docs 4

The wireguard issue is impossible to troubleshoot as there is no communication with it when it’s not working so I can’t get the logs or allow you to connect. I have learned I can remotely restart it by putting my smart outlets on a timer but this is just getting ridiculous. I just need a reliable router.

I found a bunch of other posts with the wifi issue, with no solution ever posted, and the topics get auto closed so I can’t ask.

It seems there may have been some confusion.

If the issue is limited to the WireGuard connection and your internet is otherwise working normally, you can connect the device to GoodCloud.
GoodCloud provides remote management features, allowing us to access logs, the WebUI, or use SSH to help diagnose the problem.

Regarding the Wi-Fi issue, as mentioned earlier, please export the device logs after the issue happened so we can investigate further.

Did you ever get this figured out?

My new replacement Flint 2 router on the openwrt24 version 4.8.3 firmware has nearly unusable 2.4ghz Wi-Fi as every device that connects to it has very poor speed test results and even worse latency. And when I say poor I mean 2000+ ping and under 100mbps. Happens on all my newer devices and older.

Resetting to factory and reflashing made no difference. The 5ghz band seems to work fine although the range is somewhat limited I noticed ..

I tried all kinds of different settings, left them all to default, again same result.

I totally feel ya on just wanting a reliable router as I seem to be pulling hair out every other week or so since purchasing this model last year. When it works, it works really great all around. But then without having touched or changed anything, the router will go thru a reboot and something seemingly breaks.

@will.qiu @admon

Sorry for not creating another thread but having the same issues (not with wireguard, haven't gotten that far with testing yet) I thought I'd keep it here. Haven't installed any custom plugins yet although that's why I preferred the vanilla OpenWRT firmware and it seemed faster before. Prior to resetting it my QOS plugin suddenly stopped working completely as well and would no longer go above 200mbps on wired Ethernet on a fiber 1gbps connection.

Would someone be able to help at their convenience? I hope I didn't get a bad Wi-Fi chip or something. I don't remember the model I sent in originally having this issue. That one had random slowdowns even on wired and reboots.

Using my very limited ISP provided router my devices don't have any issues with connectivity or latency or speed. But the thing is a piece of crap as you can't even change the wireless channels because they haven't locked down so much so I would much rather use the Flint 2 as so many people rave about how great it is and I've seen the results. Just want to get mine there not trying to do anything crazy with customizations or anything. Just a big gamer and PC nerd.

Thanks

I’m not sure if this has already been resolved, but I wanted to share a few observations.
I’m using the same router model with WireGuard enabled, and I have around 12 IoT devices connected to the Guest 2.4 GHz wifi (a mix of smart plugs, light switches, and a single CCTV camera). Most of my other devices are quite modern and sit on the 5Ghz wifi and had enabled another 2.4Ghz wifi for non-IoT legacy devices (legacy printer and laptop).

I previously used to have a BT Smart Hub router which worked fine but had limitations. I also noticed from time to time if meddling with joining IoT devices to it this would shutdown the 2.4Ghz band and I’d have to reboot it. Since using this Flint2 it’s been solid.

I use the Android WireGuard client on my phone to VPN back into my home network. Performance is generally fine, though it does fluctuate depending on the public Wi‑Fi networks I’m connected to.
I did run into an issue where my IoT devices kept dropping off the network shortly after I commissioned this router. It turned out to be caused by having the SSID hidden. After switching it back to broadcast mode, everything stabilised again.

I enabled Adguard on mine as its a noticeable improvement of user PiHole.

Other than that I have not moved away from the stock software (4.8.3) and will probably leave it as is for now to ensure I see a long period of stability before considering adjusting it further.

I’ve also set my router to reboot twice a week as a precaution.

I still have a Raspberry Pi that previously handled WireGuard/PiHole as my backup if I ever had issues with WG on this router. If you had the same it would be useful to consider disabling WG on the router and offloading it to the Pi instead, just to see if that improves reliability.

Maybe its worth playing about with your wifi’s and splitting your IoT devices between a couple of different access points to see if it makes an difference to the issue?

As you’ve said these issues re-occur quite frequently I guess it wouldn’t take long to determine if any of these changes improved your issue or not.

On another note, where is the snapshot version download for the flint 2 router? It seems the option here on the GLI site has been removed?

Does snapshot firmware run on vanilla openwrt version or official?

This thing is dog water. I don't understand how so many others have great experiences with this model.

You try and add a simple plug in or update it, bam it takes a shit. Want to use traffic shaping? Wiping its ass again. Simply use the 2.4ghz band with your older devices or for range? Haha nope.

Can't access the user interface login any longer despite being connected and having network access. On the login page I get an endless circle of loading with an unreadable error.msg at the top. Factory reset was the only option.

What is the point of running openwrt if you can't customize or do anything with it? I don't understand.

When is the next stable / beta firmware being released?

Alright stable firmware, beta firmware or vanilla ALL have issues with the Wi-Fi on my devices. Tested on my neighbors smart phone, same thing. Horrible latency during speed test and speeds that don't come close to what they should be.

Testing all these devices on a different router here (ISP model, ew) and no issues with high latency or speeds.

Looking at others that own the Flint 2 that were using the firmware I tried (latest OpenWRT vanilla) submitted screenshots for their mobile devices running speed tests and they did not have the issue I am seeing with mine. I think I may have a defective Wi-Fi radio and need to get this swapped out.. @will.qiu

Can you please advise? Thank you

Downloading the beta firmware 4.8.3 from the website fixed the wireguard issue so far (Knock on wood). The beta offered in the routers update interface wasn’t the latest.

The 2.4 stuff is better but I still get devices dropping on and off daily. From cat feeder, to Google Nest Hub, to cameras. The slowdown doesn’t seem to be as bad though.

Hi

Could you please check the following?

  1. Does the 2.4 GHz channel on Flint 2 match that of your ISP router, to avoid an issue related to a specific channel?

  2. Is a USB 3.0 device connected to the USB port on Flint 2? If so, try adjusting the USB interface to USB 2.0 under 'System' > 'Overview'. USB 3.0 operation may interfere with 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi.

If you have verified both of these and the issue persists, please email [email protected], attaching the purchase channel and order number, for after-sales assistance.
