Hi,

Yes, if you’d like to use vanilla OpenWRT, you’ll need to download the Sysupgrade image from the OpenWRT website.
You can then install it just like the GL.iNet stock firmware on GL.iNet Admin Panel without keeping the configuration, or flash it via LuCI under System → Backup / Flash Firmware.
(If you want to switch back to GL.iNet stock firmware later, you can also install it from Luci without keeping the configuration.)

Ok that hwat is confusing me:
Use a Sysupgrade image to update a router that already runs OpenWrt.

So Flint to with Luci active is already on OoenWRT?
So what will happen to GLinet Admin panel, will it disappear?

GL-iNet firmware runs over OpenWrt.
Go to System menu and you will see the OpenWrt version there.

Of course GL-iNet admin panel will disapear when you change to Vanila OpenWrt.

Got it finally thanks!

Is there a benefit to using the open firmware?

Always current, faster development and open so secure.

However, this isn't always a benefit.

Rolling releases vs. release cycles. While rolling ones will get all bugs (and bug fixes!) pretty fast, the cycled one is mostly more stable.

But if you encounter an issue with the GL.iNet firmware, it might require more time until a fix is deployed to you. So, you can try both ways and discover which one feels more suitable to your situation, @Relocated

Benefit..? Op24 hasn’t been updated by glinet in over 5 months :person_facepalming:. 5 months is a long time with no support. That became the final straw for me, especially after glinet promised regular op24/25 updates which was the main reason I purchased it. Configuring from scratch can be difficult unless you realm know what you are doing - without the glinet interface. Before I flashed openwrt vanilla op25, I went into Luci on glinet op24 and took screenshots of every page I could find; to ensure I didn't make any mistakes. You won't regret this switch.

I'm a complete OpenWrt newbie and decided to install vanilla on my Flint 2 because I was really fed up with the various random crashes of the Glinet version.
The Glinet configuration interface is beautiful, but it's a shame that if you want to do more advanced configurations using luci, it's a mess with every update.
It took me a few hours to configure it, watching tutorials, chatgpt/claude, and getting help on some forums, but in the end I managed to get an optimal configuration.

  • AdGuardo home
  • Various VLANs
  • Wireguard s2s with another Flint 2 in another house
  • LTE failover management
I admit it wasn't easy at all, but now I'm super satisfied because everything works. I now have a very clean log with no errors. This wasn't the case with the Glinet firmware. I had logs that were miles long for some reason.

Yep mine works perfectly as well. The only thing I miss is easy nordvpn wire guard setup. It's considerably harder in luci to get this right.

It's certainly not plug-and-play like a Glinet interface, but it's not impossible either.
I set up a site-to-site setup with multiple subnets in just a few hours, and as I mentioned before, I've never used pure OpenWrt.
The downside of OP25 is that it has drastically changed package management and related commands. Therefore, some older guides and even the AI don't always give accurate advice.

Well done on that setup!

Oh and longevity, as there is a topic about Flint 1 being no longe supported and developed (which at least for now not a case) but you never now. So to sum up there is not free lunch but you at least have an options. Choose you pill wisely
