This seems like it should be easy. If it is, can you please explain how to get it to work, step-by-step like I’m 5?
Here’s what I’ve done so far…
Both routers are updated to firmware v4.8.1 and hard reset.
Primary router
WAN is connected to ISP router and gets IP via DHCP. Out of the box this works perfectly with no configuration besides changing the router admin password.
Secondary (AP) router
WAN is connected to LAN of the Primary router. This works to create two networks. The AP router gets an IP from the Primary router and hands off it's own DHCP addresses to any connected devices.
Go to Network > Network Mode and select Access Point.
Reboot
What works...
Plugging in devices to the LAN ports of the AP results in devices on the Primary network.
Connecting to Wifi on the AP results in devices on the Primary network.
What doesn't work...
Internet access for any devices connected to the AP.
Finding the AP's WAN address on the Primary router's "Devices" tab. I'm unable to access the AP admin interface. When not in AP mode it's as easy as enabling https access in Advanced Settings, looking in the Clients tab of the Primary router, and accessing the ip in a browser over https. Once in AP mode this becomes impossible.
I tried setting a static IP assignment on the Primary router for the AP, and setting a static ip on the AP. Neither helped.
Thanks for the idea @limbot.
I tried it both ways.
Setting the AP wan address via Address Reservation on the primary router.
Setting a static ip on the AP.
In both cases the router was visible and accessible when in router mode. Once I switch to Access Point mode it becomes client connectible, but inaccessible. (and internet access doesn't work). The blue light always becomes a constant slow blinking light.
But I don't want anything on a different subnet. I want the AP to be a "dumb AP".
Regardless of the approach, choosing Access Point should set up in a way that works without any other user input. At this point I guess I don't actually know what it's supposed to do.
Do you think dropping into the configs directly and following these instructions would work?
I'll dive in and give it a try.
I think I'm not fully understanding what you are saying.
Do you mean you set the static ip of the AP router to a diffferent subnet? I didn't try that yet.
Don't worry I might have given you a bum steer. It might be just as easy as just setting access point mode. Not near any gear at the moment amn in hospital but will pull out a fresh gl.inet router and set to AP when I can…..
