Frequent WWAN disconnects (like many other people, it seems)

I use a GL-MT3000 as a repeater for travel. I typically connect my laptop and phone to it wirelessly and the router wirelessly connects to the router at the AirBnB or wherever I’m staying. I had the following problem at my last two locations (both in Thailand).

While I’m using the router my interet stops working for a few minutes, then comes back. During that time the laptop wifi doesn’t disconnect, and I can still log into the web interface. The router seems fine, just that it lost it’s WWAN connection. The front LED blinks for a while and eventually it reconnects.

Directly connecting the apartment’s wifi, bypassing the MT3000 altogether, I get a solid connection that doesn’t drop.

There are a bunch of topics here about the wan connection dropping, but I couldn’t find any that match my syptoms, and I didn’t find any answers. Apologies if I missed something.

To troubleshoot I did the following:

  • disabled my vpn
  • tried a different SSID (this apartment broadcasts separate SSIDs for 2.4 & 5)
  • downgraded the firmware per suggestions here on the forum (4.8.1 → 4.6.9)
  • factory reset

None of that helped. After a factory reset (on FW 4.6.9) I temporarily connected via ethernet and set up the wan and lan wifis with defaults and changed nothing else. Disconnections still happen.

The upstream router is a Huawei OptiXstar which I cannot access, but it looks like a basic home router, and there are no other access points. I’m on the 40th floor so there’s probably not much interference. I used WifiMan on my phone to check (I’m experienced with Ubiquiti systems) and it shows I have a -32db connection from my phone to the MT3000 and -57 to the apartment’s router (I’m sitting next to the MT3000 so its connection upstream should be about the same as my phone’s)

I looked through the system log but it’s…a lot. I’ll post the messages from a time when the connection dropped and came back in the next reply. I have lots of free time while I’m on vacation here in Thailand so I’m willing to put some time into figuring this out. Thanks y’all in advance.

From the snippet you shared, it looks like the log was captured after the disconnect happened, so it doesn’t show the actual reason the link dropped. The lines shown afterwards look like a normal recovery flow (interface reset / reconnect).

Could you please check the following:

  1. Are you using the original power adapter, or another supply that reliably meets 5V/3A?
  2. Please try updating to v4.8.2 beta or v4.8.3 Snapshot and see whether the issue still occurs.
  3. If it continues, please export the full system log and send it to us via PM so we can review it in detail.
  4. If convenient, it’s also worth testing the 4.8.3-op24 firmware.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I’m using an Anker 65w 4-port power adapter to power the router and my laptop. Unfortunately I don’t have any other USB power supply with me to test with.

I've upgraded to 4.8.2 beta and we'll see.

Missing beacons is a reason for 802.11/wifi to disconnect.

Beacons are send differently from normal unicast packages. (Unicast packages require ACK when received, if not ACKed they are retransmitted , and if that fails mutiple times the interface rate is shifted down, and transmission retried.) Multicasts/beacons are not ACKed. First attempt must be succesfull. Therefore it is sent at the “basic rate” , typical 6Mbps unless configured otherwise in the AP. Because basic rate is so slow (6Mbps versus 433 or 866Mbps), some people set this basic rate to 9,12 even 24Mbps and higher. This can cause missed beacons and multicasts , in a busy or (electromagnetic) noisy environment. (obstacles and reflections can cause extra interference also, just as too strong or nearby AP)

It looks like I may owe everyone an apology. I assumed the uplink router was fine because my friend was using it the whole time. Turns out he didn’t mention to me that it had been dropping periodically; the fault is there, not in the MT-3000.

I hadn’t thought that was likely because I was getting disconnections at the last place I stayed as well, and that seemed like too much of a coincidence. But I never really investigated those disconnections, so who knows.
