I have an X750 and my service provider (EE in the UK) tells me I need to send “669#” (my quotes) to request a balance.
Can anyone offer an AT Command string?

The modem does not support such instructions.
Oh!! I’m sure it does. How else is the SMS GUI built?
The sort-cuts in that GUI are just pre-configured AT strings.
