Hi there. I have a new GL-ATX1800. I have tested it connecting it to my AXE5300 TP-Link Mesh Router by both ethernet and wireless. I connected to the GL-AXT1800 mobile router by wireless from two Android cell phones and one Windows 11 router.
I am testing speed with Okla Speedtest on each device. Best was Windows laptop, followed by S24 and A10 cell phones. None of them came close to wireless direct to the AXE5300 TP-Link Mesh Router and I would categorize all as disapointing.
I have done a reset on the GL-AXT1800 router and also install new firmware. Otherwise I haven't changed any other settings. Please let me know if there is something I should try. Are the results as expected?
I found that the AXT1800 repeater connects to Primary router via 2.4GHz, not 5GHz, which may be the reason for the slow relay rate. Please connect via 5GHz and test again.
Among the three tests, is Phone/Laptop connected to the AXT1800 via 5GHz WiFi?
When AXT1800 is wired with Primary router, please test the wired speed of Laptop when it wired connects to the AXT1800.
Short answer is "Yes" all devices perform better when connected to the ASCT1800 via 5GHz WiFi.
Long answer is there are relatively large variations in results and need to repeat tests to make sure my results are accurate.
I am also adding NordVPN speeds to the mix which seems to result in significant hit but think it is a requirement for use case.
My use case is international travel in hotels and remote locations with Roku TV streamer, cell phones, sometimes laptop using VPN.
Are these best general guidelines:
Use WiFi connection to in room router at available wireless MHz rate (2.4 or 5). Connect device (mostly cell phone and sometimes laptop) at available wireless MHz rate (2.4 or 5).
Are there any other settings or diagnostics I can perform to increase network performance?
Traveling to Mazatlan soon so will report real world experience in a civilized, hotel experience.
Any WiFi related connection will be better via 5GHz, including GL router connects to the primary router/AP through repeater and wireless client connects to GL router.
For WAN: Wired WAN > Repeater 5GHz > Repeater 2.4GHz (Cellular modem and Tethering are not confirmed, as it is related to the cellular network and base station)
For LAN: Wired LAN > 5GHz WLAN (WIFI) > 2.4GHz WLAN (WIFI)
So, in all connections, use wired or 5GHz Wi-Fi as much as possible. It will gain a better speed experience.
Regarding the speed reduction after enabling VPN client, it may be these following reasons, please refer to:
