GL AXT1800 Intermittent Connectivity esp with WG connection

I have 3 pfsense (Protectli) based router/firewalls. They are used heavily in a business setting with multiple locations (Surveilllance< NAS connections and multiple servers even including media servers). They have worked flawlessly with a moderate learning curve. I utilize Wireguard with client to site AND site to site always on connections -- always work!
I realize ahed of time there are many variables but I am trying to narrow things down within my Amazon return window.

I purchased the GL AXT1800 for personal use for my 94yo mother PC and wanted to be able to have WG connection so I could assist and maintain her PC remotely.
She has Optimum cable internet - first challenge was Optimum's ridiculous gateways (modem/router) that I finally got their tech support to understand what "bridge mode" was and they were able to set that gateway into bridge mode by disabling its wifi and then by another setting that shut down its routing.
When connected by ethernet to the wan port of my GL router I get a public IP address.

My first problem was that when I created a WG server - I could access the netwrok remotely for anywhere from 30 sec to maybe 5 minutes - then disconnects. I tried different subnets for the WG server , I tried differnt settings for the "keep alive" time and I tried to make sure there were no IP conflicts
[of note - the Optimum gateway was originally 192.168.1.1 and not changeable - (that overlaps with one of my locations subnets) but I am not sure if that matters since it is no longer routing and is set to bridge mode]

I assumed that WG was ust not being stable on this litttle router.

Then tonight I see that the router seems to be offline all together because I had also installed as a backup Google Chrome Remote Desktop - and that now shows as offline.

Just seems to be unstable all together.

For what I am trying to do -- do I just need to spen more money and get a more. robust router / VPN firewall like my Protecltli pfsense devices?
I may have to buy a personal cable modem as well since the Optimum gateway is not configurable! The internet at that location has been rock solid for 5 years so I don't htink it is a provider issue.

thoughts ? ideas for trouble shooting?

Hi,

May I know is the AXT1800 as WG server? and what device is running the VPN client?
If possible, could you please provide the topology? As you mentioned multiple devices and don't identify whether that is a VPN server or a VPN client.

I assume the AXT1800 is server:
Can the server router WAN public IP be stable ping on the the VPN client device?
Please enable Allow Ping from WAN in server router first.

There should be no need to pay attention to the Optimum gateway, as it has been changed to bridge and the network packages will not pass through it.
