GL-AXT1800 USB Teather No Reconnect After Reboot or Power Outage

On my GL-AXT1800 when the power goes out or I reboot it my Netgear M6 tethered via USB does not get recognized upon powering back up. I have to manually unplug the USB and plug it back in. This happens as well with my phone, M5, and other modems. I know I can connect via Ethernet but... I use the Ethernet for cable modem, USB for M6 & repeater for M5. Is there a way to get the USB to recognize a modem the modem is still there on and plugged in after a reboot without having to pull the USB and plug it back in?

Hi,

Is this issue that happens all the time after you use the AXT1800, or is it something that happens when you upgrade to a certain version of firmware?

Please let me know your firmware version, and export the syslog and upload (logread.tar) here.
The syslog would like to include the process: connected the USB M6 -> the router power on -> boot-up complete -> replug the USB M6 -> got the tethering network -> end.

Hello Bruce, I'm on FW: 4.5.16 I started the process at 1034AM did each step, with M6 unplugged power up router, wait, plug m6 in wait for tether to connect, wait, pull power from router, wait, plug router back in, wait, confirm tether has not reconnected, upon full reboot, wait, unplug usb cable from M6 replug in, wait, confirm tether is reconnected.

Thank you.

I saw the USB controller boot-up normally and did not find the removable USB devices, during the router boot-up.

The router power lost, means that the syslog lost as well as, please follow this process and try it again.

Router power lose -> connected the USB M6 -> the router power on -> boot-up complete -> Check if the USB M6 works -> (if not) re-plug the USB M6 -> got the tethering network -> end.

Hi,

I have checked the syslog which the latest one you attached, found the usb port did not load during it boot-up, until replug manually.

Please let me know what brand and model of your phone is. I have tried the Apple/Huawei/Xiaomi phone has work ok, they auto re-connect when the router restart/boot-up.

Hey Bruce,

These are all modems/hotspots and are not phones, but still set up as tethering via USB. I've tested the following modems and had this same issue:

Netgear AirCard 815S
Netgear MR5200
Netgear MR5100
Netgear MR6400

If I get enough money one day to buy another Puli AX this may go away as I wouldn't need such setup.
But I would imagine this issue would persist for many hotspots based on this issue.

FWIW, I have an GL-AXT1800 and a couple of hotspots...

  • Inseego MiFi 8000 - reconnects on reboot
  • Inseego MiFi X Pro 5G - reconnects on reboot
  • Nightgear Nighthawk M6 Pro MR6500 - have to unplug/plug in again once the router has booted

But, I currently use neither as I have the GL-M2 dev board (with the 5G module) connected and it also reconnects on reboot without issues.

I *suspect* the reconnect issue is hotspot-related as opposed to router-related and that my Netgear hotspot is going into charge-only mode as there is no immediate response from the router when everything powers on ('cause the router is booting). Of course, my Netgear M6500 also has ethernet and I could work around the issue by connecting it that way. Alternatively, I could let the hotspot go into wifi mode and use repeater mode on the router and it'll automatically reconnect on reboot. Neither is ideal - but for me its a moot point (because of that GL-M2 board and its glorious 4 SMA ports connected to an outside antenna).

@RVer valid point, now in my scenario I'm stuck, Ethernet is used by my cable modem, repeater is used by my other hotspot, leaving only USB for the third internet source. In my M6 settings I have it set to charge/tether so I watched to see what happens and even upon USB loss it stays in charge/tether, at least the menu remains unchanged. I tested this on the other hotspots as well and they as well stay in charge/tether mode. I would imagine a simple (upon power up wait a sec then, power cycle the USB port would trigger the reconnect, much like unplug and re-plug) at least it would be worth a test. I found that being done via support thread for another router Mudi (GL-E750) USB Power Cycle) but was asked to open a thread for this model.

Try add these three lines in /etc/rc.local

Hello ywp,

I used WinSCP and edited the rc.local file to add the lines:

echo 0 > /sys/class/gpio/usb_power/value
sleep 20
ech 1 > /sys/class/gpio/usb_power/value

as you showed, it appears to be working. I tested with the M6 plugged in and connected pulled the power plug on my AXT1800 then plugged the power back in leaving my M6 untouched. It booted up and and the Tethering reconnected the M6. Much appreciate the assistance!!!! Might need to be a update to the next version of firmware for anyone else using all three sources for internet.

hello greekgod1820
Can I debug this problem remotely if possible?
The current solution is temporary
I'm not sure if this will affect other models
I wanted to see if there was a better way
thank you
Technical Support via GoodCloud.tar (192 KB)

Of course anything I can do to help glinet products better I’m happy to help with. What do you need me to do?

Share the device to gl.inet_support account according to the document
The private text gave me the mac address and password
Please plug in the usb modem
thank you

Hello ywp,

Your good to go shared via goodcloud to the support account. Let me know when your all done.
