I'd rather have OWRT 24.10.2 as the underlying GL stable firmware on my Slate AX (GL-AXT1800) that was launched ~2022 as the grand prize if it's all the same to you. My EOL'd Certa (GL-AR750) from 2017 has a more up to date kernel than a current product's beta based on a EOL as of 2025-08 version of OWRT.

The GL-AXT1800 has snapshot builds:
So in a next major OpenWRT release, there will be stock OpenWRT for the GL-AXT1800.

Have you ever tried using LuCI to set up a repeater while travelling, groentjuh? I'm willing to bet you haven't.
Gotta source for that assertion β because I'm referring to GL's releases β not upstream? OWRT 23.05 was released 2023-10-13. It's EOL as of last month. GL is still building betas on 23.05-SNAPSHOT.
Actually all my travel routers all run stock OpenWRT. So yes, I actually do set up those travelrouters as repeaters while traveling. I would recommend using something like: luci-app-travelmate for assisting with that.
Travelmate is pretty useful in selecting and connecting to access points on the go.
I will admit that the original setting up of mwan3 and travelmate, multiple wireguard, OpenVPN in TAP, and different SSIDs for the different uses took several hours. In my travel use now it is simply power on and use travelmate to connect to a wireless AP of the hotel or if available connect to ethernet. Accept any captive portals using the SSID, I have setup for that, and done.
Do not get me wrong; The GL-iNet firmware is awesome for making plenty of complicated tasks MUCH easier, but I do not believe it offers anything stock OpenWRT could not do. But yea, stock OpenWRT will definitely not make that always as easy to do.
Devices in snapshot always get their stable release the next time major OpenWRT release. To be clear: I am not saying GL-iNet will be building their firmware using that OpenWRT version!
Thanks for clarifying.
Now that there's a current OWRT SNAPSHOT I'm running stock OWRT when not travelling. I have no interest in building out custom conf just for when I'm heading out on the road. That's why I wanted a travel router β to quickly get a link up β but I sure would like more than just an 'appliance' approach based on stale repos when it comes to the GL firmware. The convenience of their GUI only goes so far but as you know YMMV.
