I am very much a novice here with networking and its terminology. I hope I can get help from some of the experts out there.
I have a Webcam in a remote location, that is not in Wifi range to my main router connected to the internet.
To help overcome this issue and allow me to connect to the Webcam, I have TP-Link powerline adapters and a GL-MT300N-V2.
What I would like to know is how do I setup the Mango. I would like the Mango to act as range extended on my network 192.168.1.x, accessible using my home SSID TP-LINK_1234. Here are my initial questions.
What mode do I setup the mango? Ethernet or Repeater. (I assume repeater works as a Wifi to Wifi extender. Since Mango is not within Wifi range I am leaning towards an Ethernet setup. This would allow communication through the powerline adapter over Ethernet).
To allow me to access Mango as if it was my home network, I think I need to setup a guest network with SSID TP-LINK_1234. This will still allow me access to manage the Mango over the default Wifi SSID GL-MT300N-V2-xxx.
I assume I connect the Powerline adapter to the WAN port on Mango?
Please keep me right in what I need to do. Simple responses, for a simple person
I have created a diagram to help explain my situation:-
If you want to manage your Webcam and Mango with the Primary router (TP) on same LAN, I think it is more appropriate to set Mango to AP mode.
Set the SSID "TP-LINK_1234" on Mango. Because the two routers are far apart, there is no problem in setting the same SSID (if they are close and the signals overlap, it is better to set different SSIDs)
Mango and the primary router are in the same LAN. Management SSID is not required. You can fine the Mango’s management IP on the primary router, and access Mango’s GL GUI and configure it in the LAN with this IP. After your Webcam is connected to the Mango WiFi, its IP can also be found on the primary router.
What would the consequence be if the the Main Router Wifi Signals overlapped with the Mango Wifi signal? Is it not the case that many Wifi signals with the same SSID overlap (e.g. Wifi Extenders)?
I do have Wifi Extender that may overlap (low signal strength). Will this cause a problem with the Mango? When I scan Wifi on my mobile I often see many different signals with the same SSID.
I want to be able to use the Mango in a hotel and be able to access the Wifi as if it was my home (i.e. SSID "TP-LINK_1234"). Can I use the Mango in the current setup i.e. in AP Mode? Or would I need to reconfigure something?
If multiple APs (with the same SSID) is supported 802.11 k/v/r or mesh feature, and if the signals overlap, the wireless client can automatically roam and connect to a more suitable AP. Mango does not support such features.
If Webcam is able to connect to Mango WIFI and works normally, there should be no problem.
I assume you mean taking Mango to a hotel, i.e. it will leave your home LAN, how about connecting Mango to access the Internet like at home, right? I think you can learn about remote virtual networking methods such as VPN, Tailscale, and Zerotier.
BTW, Mango does not support Tailscale and Zerotier due to reduced performance.
