GL-MT300N-V2 - Slow Wifi Speeds

Received my Travel Router today, and set it up this afternoon with my exisiting Wifi at home to test it.
The firmware update went on OK and is running the latest as of 23rd Apr 2025.

What I am finding is that the Wifi Speeds from the device are so slow. I cannot get any more than 12Mbps when I connect my phone to the router. The same phone connected direct to my Home Wifi, sees speeds no lower than 360Mbps.

I have not configured the VPN yet, so I am concerned that this will decrease further once I set that up. In fact the only configuration change I made was to connect it to my home network.

How can I get a better speed from it ? As I was getting between 5.5Mbs and 12Mbps, and that is not going to work for me. I expected better speeds.

Thanks in advance.

MT300Nv2 only supports 2.4GHz WiFi.
When MT300Nv2 repeater connects to the primary router, actually it connects with 2.4GHz WiFi.
In addition, the environment of 2.4GHz WiFi is relatively complex, with many interference sources and tight channel resources, so the speed is relatively low.

Your phone should be connected to the primary router with 5GHz WiFi, so it got 300Mbps, if the phone connects with 2.4GHz, the speed also slow.

  1. Recommended to reduce some 2.4GHz WiFi clients on your environment.
  2. If want to get a higher WiFi speed, please use GL router which it supported the 5GHz WiFi.

Thankyou for the prompt reply.
My Unifi network gives me good visibility of the split between 2.4 and 5 Ghz usage, and on the 2.4 side, there are only LED light strips and TP Link smart switches utilising that part of the spectrum, nothing else is using that part of the network, and certainly not for any sizeable bandwidth.
The Access Point it connects to has 3 other devices, none of which consume anything more than a few bps.
So, with the fact that I am only able to get 1/30th of the claimed 300Mbs, I plan to return this.
I have a fast fibre internet here, with minimal 2.4 devices and a good network. If it cannot produce decent results here, as soon as I travel where the network is not so good, I am not convinced it will work as required.
I need to see at around 100Mbs at home to be satisfied it is capable of doing what is claimed.
I dont need to buy a GL router that does 5GHz, I need this one to do what it is advertised to do (Or at least near it)

In the end i returned this and replaced it with the 1200 Opal. Happy with the speeds that delivers. It will do the job I needed it for.
