GL-MT300N-V2 - VPN server slow

Anyone had much experience using the GL-MT300N-V2 as a VPN server?

Connecting to the VPN server in the UK from the US is resulting in < 1 Mbps speeds.

Is the specs of this router just not up to this task? If that’s the case would I have more luck with a RPI 4, or do I need much more powerful hardware?

Do you use openvpn or wireguard?

The mini router can achieve 8mbps to 10mbps openvpn and 50Mbps with wireguard.

So it may not be the router.

You are connecting from US to UK so this may be the reason. Without vpn it is also slow. So:

  1. First check what is your upload speed in your UK server location. This is the max speed that vpn could achieve anyway.
  2. Try different protocols, openvpn, wireguard to find out if anyone is faster.
