GL-MT6000 (Flint 2) New user, which firmware is most suitable for me?

Hi, I have just upgraded from my ISP supplied router to a Flint 2.

My current setup is: 1000Mbs Internet → Flint2 → Managed Switch

Current Flint2 firmware (GLiNet) : 4.8.3 Release - OpenWrt 21.02-SNAPSHOT

I’m struggling to decide if I should stick with the above, swap to GliNet OpenWrt 24 or Vanilla OpenWrt .

I’m finding conflicting information regarding functionality with Vlans and IPv6 with some posts suggesting bugs with my current firmware implementation.

I do have some previous Openwrt experience, although not with Vlan setup. I guess I’m looking for a simple explanation of the pros/cons/reasons for the 3 options with reassurance that the additional functionality I need isn’t broken/buggy.

Thanks in advance to whoever can point me in the right direction.

Hi

The complexity of VLAN configuration is consistent across all three firmware versions, each of which requires setup through Luci.
VLAN functionality should operate normally with both GL.iNet's stock firmware and the op-24 firmware.

If you encounter any configuration issues, please provide us with detailed requirements so that we can assist you more effectively.

Thanks, is there any reason I shouldn’t change to the op24 firmware?

Will op24 become the official firmware at some point, just wondering why the older op21 is being retained as official, is there something I would lose by updating?

The stock firmware is built on the MediaTek (MTK) SDK, whereas op24 is based on the open-source OpenWrt framework. The primary distinction between them is the underlying Wi-Fi driver.

From a GL.iNet feature perspective, both firmware options provide the same functionality.

Differences, if any, are typically limited to Wi-Fi behavior and performance, which can vary based on factors such as device density, interference, and client compatibility.
As a result, neither option can be considered universally better; performance will depend on the specific network environment.

You can test both versions of the firmware and choose the one that performs better on your environment.

WiFi range with OP21 is a lot better compared to the OP24 version, cause the official MTK drivers.
I hope that GL.iNet (@will.qiu) for this unit NEVER drop the OP21 version.
If you need to cover a large area without mess with repeater or other access point the OP21 is a very good and suitable solution.
