May I know do you want the thread border router in fact, which for connectivity with the Smart IoT devices right?

I assume S20 can work for creating the thread network, but just try that for you please.

I thought the GL-S20 would be sufficient to control a smart light bulb with extended possible functions.

I read about it on the Nanoleaf website: A Matter-compatible smart home hub and a Thread Border Router are required to connect your Matter lights to a smart home ecosystem and to take advantage of all the features and benefits of Matter over Thread.

Is a bridge necessary for all IoT devices?

An app for Android has recently been released for GL-S20.

(Unfortunately, it is not possible to access S20 from the app).
Message in the app: Thread firmware please use web management

Is it possible that the integration of IoT's with the app is improved?
Is there a roadmap?

Sorry to inform that the S20 have not supported the Thread credentials, so it could not connect to the IoT devices which work with the Matter over Thread.

But we already have a roadmap to develop this feature in this season.

If you now require to the Thread border router with Matter over Thread, please consider the GL-S200.
