GL-SFat1200/Opal

I got this AC1200 Wireless Router to allow my Blink Canera to work down in my workshed about 45 yards from my home where I have the working Spectrum home wifi modem/router.

I also have a netgear Access Point to plug into the outlet w the understanding that I can get connected to wifi by using an ethernet cird to connect this new router to the AP in the workshed. Why cant i get things working?

Hello,

Sorry. You mentioned a lot of devices, I don't know much about which device the SFT1200 is connected to, and it won't work. Could you draw a topology network image?

If the WAN port of SFT1200 is directly connected to the LAN port of the main router, will SFT1200 work?

I can work on a topology markup tomorrow. In meantime, I have this labeled photo if the netgear access point plugged into an electrical outlet in the backyard shed. The access point has ethernet ports that I have put an ethernet chord into and the other end of the ethernet chord I plugged into tge WAN port of the Wireless Router.

My goal is to get a signal to work in this shed using tbis setuo. Im not even sure this is how its done. Im going off of memory because I set up an access point 10 years ago in our old home where we made a mancave out in the detatched garage where we had a similar problem getting internet.

is the AP the gateway network, or ?

To be honest, I am not certain.

I was hoping that my memory of needing a similar setup was necessary in order to get an internet signal in a place that was far from our internet modem and router in the main house. (But that as long as the main source of internet was plugged into the same electrical power source as the AP and second router), this arrangement or setup will allow the signal to work in the far-off work shed.

Maybe it would help to ask this point blank, with more background....

I have an existing wifi internet service in my home. The router and modem have been provided by Spectrum Services.

I also own a work shed behind my home...we have power down there in the workshed but dont get an internet signal down there because it is so far away from the main home. (Probably 50 yards from the house).

Is this sort of senerio something that can be rectified by installing an AP and another seperate router in the workshed in order to get internet in the workshed?

Also, i found this on google AI response...

'On a GL.iNet router, the "mode switch" selection allows you to choose the primary network function of the router, typically including options like "Router" (default), "Access Point", "Extender", "Bridge", or "WDS" (depending on the model), essentially determining whether the router acts as a full gateway, just a wireless access point, a signal booster, or a simple network bridge to connect to a wired network.

Key points about the GL.iNet mode switch:

  • Customizable: You can configure the function of the mode switch through the router's web interface, often allowing you to set it to toggle specific features like a VPN client (OpenVPN or WireGuard) on or off.
  • Access via settings: To change the mode switch function, navigate to the "System" or "Toggle Button Settings" section in the router's web interface.
  • No default function: By default, the mode switch may not have any assigned function.

I understand your internet is there over this "powerline" device. (Ethernet over powerline)
Ok to make a Wifi AP the GL-SFT1200 can deliver this.

Connect one of the Netgear ethernet ports to the WAN port of the SFT1200

Login in the SFT1200 through wifi or via one of the LAN ethernet ports of the SFT1200
The WAN ethernet connection should start automatic, if the other end of the Netgear Powerline is connected to a router and is reachable.

Your home IP range should be seen
Something similar to this ...

(addresses here are mine, yours will be different)

In network mode you can stay on "router" mode (with its own 192.168.8.x addresses) and connect to home devices or internet from there, or switch to "access point" mode , where the wifi devices there will also get an IP address from your home network. But then it may require some searching to be able to connect to this setup page again as the IP address range is different.

Be aware of the warning on that page

When you change the router’s network mode, you may need to reconnect all of your client devices.

When you use Access Point mode, you will not be able to connect to this UI again. You can press and hold the reset button for 4 seconds to revert to router mode. Learn More >
