Hello, I have a new GL-SFT1200. Upon initial setup, there was a page that asked about VPN which listed a BUNCH of them to choose from. I chose mine (Surfshark) which took me to the Surfshark website, not anywhere where I could log into my existing Surfshark account.
Getting ready to go on a cruise, and the end goal is to have my Amazon Firestick connect to the GL-SFT1200 router, and also have the router connected to the VPN.
How do I tell the router to connect to the VPN?
Thank you! Will this be a 1 time deal, or will I be doing this every time I turn the router on?
Keeping in mind I will ALWAYS want the server to be in the USA, so that I can stream content from the amazon Firestick.
I'm sorry to bother you again, but.... I followed your instructions until I got to "Copy the server IP and Server public key, and paste them into the router configuration."
I successfully logged into the router admin panel which I assume is where I should find the place to enter the server IP and Public key. My main choices there are: Internet, Wireless, Clients, VPN, Applications, Network, and System. Each of those have submenus, and I THOUGHT I had looked at all the options, but I didn't see a spot to enter the required info. Am I looking in the wrong place?
If you are configuring your GL-SFT1200, wouldn't you use these instructions? The earlier link shows how to download configuration files for use with the WireGuard client installed on pc etc, but it seems to me that what you want is to configure your travel router so no client application is required...
You have me at a disadvantage sir. I admit, I am a noob, but not completely illiterate. For example, I know what a router is, along with in IP address, and I can get into the router configuration page. But, I couldn't tell you exactly what a client application is.
As I said in my first post, the end goal is to have my Amazon Firestick connect to the travel router, which in turn, is connected to a VPN. I was able to tell the Firestick to connect with the router, but my question was how to tell the router to connect to the VPN.
Admon was kind enough to give me directions, which I followed. Those directions ended by telling me to copy/paste the public key and server IP into the router configuration. I THOUGHT it would be as simple as that, until I got into the router configuration and failed to find anywhere that asked for input of the public key and server IP.
Apparently, I gave incomplete information to begin with. A PC doesn't figure into this at all, as I will be using the Ipad when I travel. I THOUGHT the setup precess was going to simple and straightforward, but now I'm confused. Are you telling me that the initial instructions Admon provided me with, are for something other than what I want for my end goal?
I’m fairly sure that the link I provided shows how to connect your router to the vpn. I interpreted the Admon instructions as the information needed to set up a WG client on a pc, which as you stated is unnecessary.
Have you watched the video in the link I posted? Does it make sense to your application?
It’s possible to use WireGuard on a pc by installing a client application, which requires the information to be copied and pasted as mentioned in the first link - but that’s not what I understand you need.
After watching the video you provided (Thank you!) I realized I didn't have the app. I Dl'ed the app and followed along with the video, pausing it it every step to make sure I did EXACTLY what it directed. Upon completion, it told me to do an online IP search to confirm that the current IP was the same as what I wanted to hook up to.
This is where it has possibly gone sideways. My search shows that my IP is 89.xxx.xxx.xx, which is out of Los Angeles. What I chose in the wireguard client dashboard was an IP out of New York 10.xx.x.x. Obviously not the same.
Did I misunderstand this? I thought when I did the IP search, it was supposed to show the NY one.
Firstly, I am not an expert - I’ve just done this a few times myself and I have no experience with SurfShark. But I would agree that you should see the IP address associated with the vpn location you selected.
Let me poke around a little more and see if I can find something more informative.
