So I bought a gli stf 1200 today to increase the wifi speeds in a motel 6 I will be staying in for a few weeks so I can play games on my ps5. The current speeds I get are 3 mbps without a the device so I thought a travel router would help as a repeater or extender but as soon as I set everything up I only get 500kbps instead effectively making the wifi around 4x slower. I have tried changing it to extender instead of router, resetting the router, trying speeds with Ethernet, trying speeds with 5ghz, trying speeds with 2.4ghz but to no prevail and can not seem to get any proper increase of the speed of wifi. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated

By repeating the signal via wireless you are essentially cutting the speed. The idea behind a travel router is to piggy back off the existing network to create a secure network.
You can't increase the speeds of an already slow network. If your clients are only getting 3mbps on the original motel WiFi then that's your bottleneck.
Chances are they have limited the bandwidth to each connected device. If that's the case then you are out of luck. If you can find an ethernet port then you can connect the travel router directly to that port and that way your speeds won't degrade (you will see what the true network speeds are vs potential WiFi degradation) as you are not repeating anything wirelessly however you will only still be able to deliver their maximum throughput, which in your case seems to be 3mbps.
