Help Needed – Setting Up My GL Router as an Extender

Hello,

The internet connection in my residence is restricted by a portal, so I purchased a GL router to create a Wi-Fi access point and connect my devices (Google Home, smart home devices, etc.).

While configuring my router, I selected the "Extender" mode. However, I then received the following message:

"After bridging is successful, if you need to access the UI of this router, you must manually configure your PC/mobile phone to a static IP address in the same range as the router. If you still cannot access it, you can restore the routing mode by holding down the reset button for 4 seconds."

After this step, I am unable to connect to my router and have to reset it every time.

Could someone explain how to proceed in this situation or provide a step-by-step tutorial? I am using Windows 11 and I have the GL-SFT-1200.

Thank you!

Before you go over from Network Mode "Router" to Network mode "Extender" check the IP address the GL router received from the residence router/portal.

That is the IP address to use.

With Network Mode "Router" your Windows 11 receives an IP address from the GL router LAN ( typical 192.168.8.x) , and the GL router gets one from the residence router/portal on its WAN interface.

Take note of the WAN IP address, it is probably the same when in the Extender mode, if both modes use the same (Factory) MAC address.

With Network mode "Extender" the GL router subnet is not used , only the resident subnet. Your Windows 11 IP address will change when your reconnect after the switch to Extender

Try to connect to that noted IP address from your Windows 11.
Ways to find the IP address are either with IP scan tool in Windows, using same value as router, or check the DHCP lease list of the residence portal, or you could have set a fixed (non DHCP) address on the GL router valid in the residence portal subnet range.

As initial trial, It might be good to allow WAN access to the GL router.
"System Security -> Remote Access Control ->"

Another backup step is to add the GL router to the GoodCloud.xyz (Cloud Services -> Goodcloud) and enable "Enable Remote Web Access" and/or "Enable Remote SSH"

Or just also open port 80 from the residence network "System Security -> Open Ports on Router"

it is too many to keep them all, once you have a permanent path to get in, close the other paths for security of your GL router.
