iPhone tethering issues X3000

Hi All,

Seeking some assistance for my ongoing tethering issues with my GL.inet x3000 router. When connected via a USB to my iPhone 15 iOS version 18.11 after a while it drops internet connection on the router. If I disconnect the connection and reconnect in the admin portal the connection returns but anywhere from 1 min to half an hour later it drops again. I am on the latest version for the router v4.

See log as follows seems:

Looks like the quality and interface of the data cable is not good and loose, you can try to replace the new data cable.
This is the passive timeout of the connection detection of the ipheth process.

Hi Bruce,

Thanks for your reply you might be onto something as I think the usb to usb c cable I’m using was from an old Oppo phone and not the original iPhone cable. Will try a different cable and post back if this fixes the tethering issues.

Cheers,

John.

I have been seeing similar events as well, though I have not looked in the logs. But my phone will not stay connected for some reason. I did change the cable and that hasn't helped. I figured it was dying due to not charging enough, but that just doesn't seem likely. All I can offer is another voice - it is installed away from home and I don't want to drive out just to keep testing stuff lol. I'll wait until it the modem is down too or I have another reason to go out there.

Changing the cable made no difference I see “kernel panic” and other warnings and errors in both logs, it seems to be a bug in the software guys. I would try a different phone but my wife’s is also an iPhone all be it an older model :frowning:

It’s a pity as this functionality to tether is why I bought the router.

Please provide the issue syslog file.

Does the iPhone reminder trust this computer/device when the connection drops?

During the connection of tethering, is the phone moved (on hand), or static and fixed next to the router?

I tried to reproduce in my router, iPhone15, iOS 18.0.1, X3000, both in the v4.4.13 and 4.7.1, none of them did not reproduce.

Please try to change one more data cable.

  • The phone is not moved once plugged in and sits on a ledge close to the modem. The phone is static once connected etc.

Checked the log of USB, the -75 appears, which may be that the size of the transmission of a single packet is bigger than the size of the iPhone receiving, so buff is not enough, and the USB driver is abnormal.

  1. Try to modify the Tethering interface MTU <1200.
  2. If not, export a configuration from the Luci (Luci > system > backup and firmware ... > download the backup. I will try to reproduce.
  3. Try to upgrade to V4.7.1 firmware without "Keep settings".

Hi Bruce, my menu does not appear to be the same as yours in the router admin portal as I do not have the settings for TTL, HL or MTU displayed to adjust this. I did manage to find the setting in LuCI (Advanced Settings) and adjusted the MTU to 1180 for eth2 (iOS ) I will see how that goes today and will let you know if this prevents the connection dropping.

For anyone following: To adjust this setting you need to log into LuCI under “Advance Settings” use your existing login password for the router admin portal. Once logged in go to “Network”, the menu drops down so then select “Interfaces”, you will have 3 tabs across the top of the page you need to select “Devices”. Find the entry that relates to your tethered device, in my case eth2. Click on the entry and then click on “Configure” to adjust the MTU setting only, I changed mine to 1180 as advised. Please note you must click “Save” and then “Save and Apply” otherwise the change doesn’t stick.

Connection stayed up for around 1.5hrs then dropped again unfortunately…

I have unticked the option in this same area for my eth2 to disable the option for IPv6 and only allow IPv4 and the connection seems stable. Will leave it overnight and see if it stays connected.

Not sure why this affects it, might just be a fluke.

Thank you.

Does the IPv6 feature enable on the GL GUI? And the interface eth2 has the IPv6 address?

Please share the backup configuration. Then please test again in the v.4.7.1.

Hi Bruce I cannot seem to load the back up file to the forum as the file ends in tar.gz and it claims this is not an allowed file extension etc. I will manually update the router as suggested to 4.7.1 and not keep current settings and see how it goes.

IPv6 was not enabled in the GUI of the router interface and never has been etc as well mate. If you let me know how I can upload the tar.gz file I am happy to share it with you.

Well 4.7.1 did not fix this issue connection dropped after about 20 min.

Managed to convert the tar.gz to a .tar file hopefully this helps.
