- There's auto upgrade in documentation Upgrade - GL.iNet Router Docs 3
- But it's missing in settings.
My example: GL-SFT1200 (Opal) on 4.3.25 firmware.
Does it mean auto upgrade is turned on or off? If off - how turn it on?

Auto upgrade is removed in firmware 4.x
Means only manual upgrade possible?
What was the reason to remove it?
Some users used auto upgrade and their installed plugins are lost and don't know why.
So we'd better let the user start the update manually and fix anything immediatelly if it happens.
We will improve and provide better notification of update, especially for security patches.
Not everyone even uses plugins. Some people want to set auto-updates and never log in again.
How can I get firmware update notifications without manually checking settings?
You can't right now.
Or by using GoodCloud, which is integrated - but not the "hassle-free" solution you might be looking for.
Agree : Auto-upgrade is a MUST feature.
It may have been too easy to activate previously and led to issues.
But being able to enable auto-upgrade is a must have for security reason.
Until now, my Glinets were "plug and forget", with auto-upgrade enables. Since 4.X, it is a burden.
Meh, I'm not so fan of auto upgrade also because of configuration migrations, if it goes wrong it can go really wrong which is out of control and visibility scope.
I rather have a better idea, why not make the gl app for the phone trigger a simple notification for a upgrade and a single click starts the process?
it could even be done with a changelog and some confirmination buttons, a smartphone is easy accessible.
I have a feeling that people who use auto-update have zero business messing with their router settings. These are the first people who come to the forums crying for help but haven’t bothered to do any self-help or basic troubleshooting. All because of an auto update that broke their settings or something.
I say this on behalf of all software developers.
Auto update is not an option that I would use especially now since the GL firmware is at 21.x and from what I have read they intend to jump to 24.x -- Jumping from those two will not work unless the dev's write a bunch of scripts to make it seamless to the average user which I honestly think in even the most basic changes a user makes to their network will break your connection to the internet and a lot of those experiencing the auto update will think their device is bricked and end up throwing their device in the junk drawer or even worse in the garbage.
Bottom line you need to be there and do it yourself and if something happens you know why it happened and can figure out why it happened because you initiated it
This may change when openwrt goes from 24.x to 25.x and there are no problems but who knows what a new kernel will bring in the future.
That could be an option.
Settings is about CHOICE, the mere ability to do so if user wants.
Default / non-default - is a separate question.
For some reason, you have auto-updates ability in nearly every firmware you might think of. On your phones, PCs, etc. But not on a router that is constantly probed for remote hacks.
