I know this probably sounds really stupid... but My 5090 server sits at home - I run it 100% headless - now using the GL-KVM box - and accessing it currently through my work laptop.
BUT - is there some device that can just connect to a spare Monitor/keyboard/Mouse at the other end - and allow me to connect to the GL-KVM via the internet - without a host machine to run software at all?
Sorry if this is a naive question - but if it were possible - it would free me from dependance on a laptop to use the 5090 remotely...
There are a number of thin clients both in software CD and physical hardware. They tend to be used to take a local machine and let you connect to a remote via some protocol like VNC or RDP or 2X or nomachine or any number of ways.
They sell a number of used thin clients online but some need to use proprietary means.
I don't think GL-net makes a gizmo like that.
Knoppix cd/dvd had a terminal server that allowed one to pxe to some hardware and remote into a knoppix system.
What do you mean by "at the other end"? Do you mean access from your house, outside your house, work, etc?. There's a number of mini PCs on sale at the moment around $150 or so that might work for what you are looking for. You just need a web browser capable device, so even a used Chromebook might work. Older used PCs might be an option if you want cheap, since there's limited processing power need.
Otherwise, there's nothing stopping you from attaching the monitor, mouse and keyboard directly to the 5090 system as well, unless it's just in an unaccessible location.
Thanks Chuck - When I am at home I get good service via my work laptop on the Wifi network - but when I am away (4 days a week) the work laptop is limited to using the tailscale app - and it's not a very pleasing use case - seems slow and jittery. I just wondered if by simplifying the connection down to a tiny windows box or similar it would improve anything - and I would be able to use the GL-KVM app - which my work won't allow on my laptop. It was just an idea. Now I know they are releasing new firmware on 24th to beta that may avoid tailscale use, I'll wait and try that first. Otherwise I'll drege out the old macbook and try and use that as a client.
Gotcha, given that you're outside your home network, you'll need for now something Windows based to use their app to access the KVM externally, or someone here can maybe talk about Tailscale (I have no knowledge of that, but is a potential supported solution).
I also assume you can port forward UDP port 443 to the box, but that might not be something you want to do, since 443 is a common port and is often probed. You might could assign a random port and map it to port 443, but I haven't tested that at this point myself, so not sure how well that might work. I also don't know if any other ports might be needed (again, haven't tested much yet).
It should be achievable with just a pad or a mobile phone and an expansion dock. For the current firmware, install tailscale on the mobile phone and then access it through a browser maybe?
When I access on my phone/ipad pro I find it impossible to navigate / zoom in or anything. It has a very weird behaviour and doesn’t respond the way I would expect. I don’t find it usable even with 12.9 inch screen. I’ll try it with a dock expander to monitor and keyboard + mouse and see how that looks. Thank you.
Hello minmie. I have the same problem when using mobile devices. When I access a pc using ANYDESK (through my phone) for example, it allows me to zoom in, has an on screen mouse that i move around which controls the real mouse, and automatically opens keyboard when tapping in a text box. Is it possible to just cop/paste these features from ANYDESK and add them to RM1? I would really appreciate it
