Please try this firmware with newer wifi driver.
@JerryZhao nice one! That one instantly got an IP address and seems to be functioning! (Granted, I did it like 2 minutes ago but I am typing this through the MT3000 without my Phone tethering and stuff... So so far that version seems to be working

Jist tried the firmware posted above and scanning for networks seems to show the expected list of networks but the connection still fails.

I have the same issue. At home (Germany) everything worked perfectly and during vacation (Netherlands and France) no WiFi in repeater mode. I tried it with 4.5.16, 4.6.2 and 4.6.3 rc.
Luckily I have my Shadow with me as well (4.3.17) with find all network in repeater mode.
Different countries, different country codes for Wi-Fi mostly.
Set it to France. Still no WiFi.
Do you see the Wi-Fi if you use luci
for scanning?

Yes. I can see several networks with luci.

Do you mean that when using the smartphone app there is no wifi network can be scanned?
How about using the web browser at 192.168.8.1?
It could be a bug of smartphone app, not the router firmware.
In the iOS app and the web interface 192.168.8.1 I see no networks. With luci I see all networks around me.
I mean the stock web panel at 192.168.8.1, not luci. Can you see the wifi scan list?
iOS and stock web panel show no networks. Only with luci I see the network but can not connect because the captive portal didn’t pop up.
Can you give me the system log after you do a scan via the web admin panel?
