Any update on either of the following?
- GLiNet making spare batteries for the Mudi 7 available for purchase via their store
- Specs/Model # for a 3rd-party compatible battery
Any update on either of the following?
this is definitely much needed!!!
Hi
We still plan to sell replacement batteries for the Mudi 7 in the future, but since battery sales involve additional logistical and regulatory considerations, we do not have a timeline to share at the moment.
Please do not use arbitrary third-party batteries, as they may pose safety risks.
Hey !
Come on guys, another 2 months have passed by, but still no replacement batteries available. You cannot seriously expect customers to wait for these batteries endlessly… They should have been made available already with the rollout of the router, as other manufacturers e.g. ZTE is doing…
So hurry up, it is high time, or we are obliged to look somewhere else for 3rd party ones…
Hi,
We apologize for the inconvenience caused.
We are still discussing internally and evaluating how to address the challenges related to battery sales, and currently we do not have any concrete results or ETA available.
Please note that we still strongly recommend against using any third-party batteries, and we cannot take responsibility for any consequences caused by third-party batteries.
Since spare batteries aren't available yet, it might be worth looking at the other side of this: making the installed one last longer.
There's an ongoing request for a charge limit, and on the E5800 the hardware side turns out to be there already — the charge path can be gated from software on stock firmware. I tried it on mine today: capped at 80 %, charging stops cleanly and the temperature stays near idle instead of charging levels.
Not asking anyone to run a script — that's a workaround, and it has to re-apply after every plug event. But as a proper firmware setting it would take some pressure off the spare-battery situation, especially for people running these 24/7.
@will.qiu — would that be worth considering while the battery supply question is still open?
Hi,
I believe you are referring to this feature request:
We have recorded it and submitted it to the product team for evaluation. We will check whether it can be supported in future firmware releases.
Thanks. One thing that may help the evaluation: on the E5800 the charge path can already be gated from software on stock firmware — details in my post in that thread. So it may be less work than it looks.
How’s the spare battery purchase going? A lot of us are really looking forward to it! Any news yet on when we can expect it? Thanks
I would love for this to happen also, purchase of a second battery would be a Godsend.
Unfortunately, there is still no update we can share at the moment.
We are still working on it and doing our best to make progress.
I think if you guys standardize on an industrial design, then you won't have to make a new Mudi battery in the future. I too like replaceable batteries, and the EU is enforcing it. Qi2 support would be nice!
Just a reminder that many of us would still like to buy a spare secondary battery! Don’t let this topic be forgotten — it’s important, and we’re waiting for the news. Thanks!
It doesn't look very hopeful for getting replacement batteries. I haven't found any GL.iNet device where spare batteries were sold directly — not the Mudi, Mudi V2, or Puli. I've also seen customer reports of them being told to replace the entire device when the battery fails, which really doesn't match with the rest of how GL.iNet operates.
So given the fact this battery policy is unlikely to change anytime soon can you please release a pinout diagram for the battery connections and specs for any internal temp sensor or data lines so we can make our own? Is the internal pack a simple cell + protection circuit, or does it include an onboard fuel-gauge/authentication IC that communicates with the router?
You give us root, SSH, full OpenWrt access, and trust us to not brick our own devices. A battery pinout is a much smaller ask than any of that, and it's the kind of thing a right-to-repair-friendly company should be comfortable sharing especially without selling the replacement part themselves.
I understand you recommend against it but once the battery fails it becomes functionally useless and once it is out of warranty a custom battery solution is going to be the only option unless a 3rd party seller releases one which I haven't seen either. At this point we have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Worst case scenario we break it and have to buy a new one or we don't even attempt it and still have to buy a new one.
Hi,
To clarify, the Mudi 7 can operate on external power with its battery removed. If the battery eventually fails, the router can therefore still be used with an external power supply, although battery-powered operation and power-loss backup will no longer be available.
We understand the comparison with root access, but a lithium battery is different from software access. An incorrectly designed or assembled battery pack can cause overheating, fire, or personal injury. For this reason, we cannot provide the requested pinout or technical details for building a replacement battery.
We are still working internally to move the replacement-battery matter forward. The safety, regulatory, and logistical requirements take time to resolve, so please give us a little more time. We will share an update when we have confirmed information, but we cannot provide an ETA at this stage.
I think you're an external battery away from beating every other cellular router on the market. Like I said, so am I. Just standardize your industrial design. Your core customer base cares more about features than design. This isn't an iPhone that has a new design every single year that requires new accessories. A standardized design will save your company money.
Thanks for the suggestion.
We appreciate your feedback on standardizing the battery design and will share it with our product team for consideration.
Well the regulations you're talking about don't seem to apply to the battery already in the device. Maybe you could offer a service where you have customers ship their device to you and then you put a fresh battery in it and send it back.
Thanks for the suggestion. However, a return-and-replacement service would not be a practical solution for us at this time.
Sending devices back to our factory would involve significant shipping costs and long turnaround times, especially for international customers. Handling replacements at regional warehouses would still require us to ship replacement batteries separately to each location in compliance with the applicable regulations, as well as provide dedicated facilities and trained personnel for the replacement work.
We are still working internally on the replacement-battery issue, but we do not have any confirmed update or ETA to share at this stage.
Hi @will.qiu,
Thank you for explaining the challenges involved in making spare batteries available.
I own a Mudi 7 and am very keen to purchase a few genuine GL.iNet spare batteries for travel and extended use away from a power outlet. I am looking to buy additional batteries, rather than arrange a battery-replacement service for the router.
Would your team be able to consider a paid purchase with delivery to an agreed address in Hong Kong or Shenzhen, where I could travel to collect the batteries myself? For example, this could be a friend’s home address, a parcel-receiving or forwarding warehouse that accepts standalone batteries, or a courier collection point or parcel locker—whichever your team and the delivery provider can support.
The intention would be to collect the batteries personally, not have the receiving service forward them overseas. This would also give me some flexibility to arrange the trip within the receiving location’s permitted holding period, without requiring your staff to meet me at a particular time. I would, of course, cover the purchase price and any applicable delivery or collection charges.
Alternatively, if your team already permits collection by appointment, I would be happy to collect from your Hong Kong Science Park office or an approved location in Shenzhen. I understand that your offices, engineering facilities, and manufacturing sites may not be open to visitors, so I would only visit with your team’s explicit agreement and prior arrangements.
I appreciate that local delivery or personal collection may not resolve all the requirements involved in selling spare batteries. I am simply hoping there might be an approved arrangement your team could accommodate while wider availability is still being worked out. I would genuinely be willing to make the trip specifically to purchase them.
Could you please check with the relevant team whether either option might be possible? I would be happy to discuss pricing, quantities, payment, and the delivery or collection arrangements privately.
Thank you very much for looking into this!
