I'm shopping for a travel mobile (4G or 5G) hotspot (for international / mostly europe) that can support wireguard into my home ubiquiti network (USA) and I've be strongly looking at the MUDI and it looks like it's quite a capable in that regard but I have some questions:
1. Can the MUDI support Wifi as WAN? (e.g. can I connect to say hotel wifi or similar with the MUDI providing a 2nd WIFI network which is wireguard/etc protected and routed thru the hotel wifi?). OpenWRT documentation seem to say this is possible and the these threads allude to it as well (giving the order of WAN priority)
Since the device is dual network capable am I just giving up a single network? Would I be able to leave this config to switch to cellular if the external wifi is no longer available (doesn't have to be immediate failover etc, just curious if I need to mess with settings pages very frequently)?
Is the v3 unit coming soon? I've seen some posts discussing it
If Wifi as WAN is not available or would be very poor performance, would I be better off just getting one of the battery powered routers (e.g. beryl ax) that support Wifi of Wan and just ethernet hardwire into that router from a dedicated hotspot if using cellular?
Yes, supported WiFi as WAN. If the WiFi connection drops, the WAN will auto switch to Modem (the SIM card inserted).
I assume there may be a period of time to release the Mudi V3.
GL is currently focused on BE3600, and the next one BE9300.
Beryl ax router has NO battery.
The MUDI V2 has a attached dock to add the RJ45 port and it can be as WAN or LAN.
In addition, the performance of Mudi V2 is average. If only use the self-combo functions of GL firmware (such as WireGuard VPN), there is no problem. If third-party plugin is installed, its performance is not enough.
Perfect. Thank you for the response. I'll go with the Mudi v2 for now. Looking forward to playing with it.
Re: 3) Yes, the no battery is solvable, but less convenient for sure. I was more asking if I'd be better off performance wise going with a Beryl AX + old phone (say Pixel 4, which has no 5G) / Netgear M1 + battery pack
If you require the high performance for the router, you can choose this combination.
TBH, the performance of Beryl AX is medium level, but enough to do the job
