I just opened a brand new Flint 2 router to replace my old router that has just died on me and I’m at a complete loss.
Directly out of the box, I plugged in all my ethernet connections and set up the WiFi SSID + password, and for some reason, the router is already super laggy (ie. the UI doesn’t respond very quickly, and websites load relatively slowly).
I looked at the Advanced page and see that loads are between 7-15, and the CPU is getting hammered. Temperature of the CPU is showing 80 degrees celcius (174.2 degrees F). I am just sitting the router on a table, nothing special.
When logging into the router via SSH, I tried to see what’s hogging the CPU but it’s not very descriptive.
I’ve tried to reset the firmware to factory defaults but it doesn’t help the situation. I have just now set the WiFi power both for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz to Low to see if it helps (as some have mentioned that WiFi increases the power/temperatures) but it’s not dropping.
I'm not aware of any bug that can cause this issue. Can you state what firmware are you running? I have been running OpenWRT 24 since years and I always update to the latest version 1 week after the release and never had issues.
To avoid that it is an external device through LAN/USB ports, simply detach them and try OpebWRT 24 latest version.
So, I reflashed with official OpenWRT 24 as per their wiki/docs via Sysupgrade and it’s helped slightly - the unit doesn’t work as hard, but overnight still reaches relatively high temperatures. Once we hit the high temperature levels, Internet becomes extremely sluggish and websites take some time to load. Heck, even today I’m struggling to work from home on my home internet and have to resort to using a 5G modem because pages were not loading.
I’m not sure why this is happening - the unit is performing even worse than the locked modem that my ISP provided, and that’s meant to be a really cheap modem with terrible performance.
how could you run Open-wrt 24? isnt latest version OpenWrt 21.02-SNAPSHOT / LuCI openwrt-21.02 branch git-22.335.71649-0ecaf74 ?
Or are you not runnin GLinet firmware? when it gets to LuCi and then open WRT i get confused
That's a first to me. Ive bought a couple of Flint 2s and for my cousins too. They work flawlessly with minimum resource usage. Even with many apps imstalled.
I added a simple old used CPU-Fan and connected it to an splitter which is running by the usb-power of the flint and also have a storage stick 64 gb.
It just run fine and since the fan i do`nt panic anymore about temps.
For my Slate/Beryl i bought just a fancontrol and also constructed a little coolerpad and with this you can also control the speed. But since the appartment in Albania have now AC its just for the rare random hours of energy-takeouts.
I did something similar. I had an old 120mm USB fan that I used to cool an android TV box for years, then got tired of the box and repurposed the fan for my Flint 2 which now runs around 35 degrees or so. I also bought an 80mm fan and set my Slate 7 on top of it. Without the fan, the Slate ran mid 70’s or more, so the internal fan ran pretty well every 30 seconds or so. With the USB fan running, I get a temp of around 52 degrees and the internal fan never runs.
I have both fans plugged into each of the router USB ports (both set at USB -2)
