Occasional crash on standard repeater or luci channel analysis

Hey! When starting a scan for APs when enabling repeater, or when going to Luci and doing a channel analysis, the entire router sometimes crashes (and if not, just returns no values in the case of repeater)

I have tried factory resetting it, and it still breaks. Note, in all cases, wifi modes are set to 5ghz 11n/ac/ax with channel fixed at 161, and 2.4ghz 11n/ax with channel set to 11. The crash log mentioned I was also doing tethering from a phone, but this seems to be an issue regardless of tethering or not, and does not have an effect over whether it crashes vs just fails.

I am connected over wifi while this happens, so the expectation is to see a disconnect + reconnect here.

Note the crash does not always happen - when it doesn’t crash, channel analysis works fine, but the repeater AP scan still shows no entries.

hmm I’m not entirely sure but when I skim fast through your log.

it looks like to me the wifi driver has trouble getting power and the transactions/tx time out.

is also listed in the stacktrace.

above this stacktrace I see that it finds multiple usb devices (2,3) and it sees one as possible tethering.

what is this device?? is this device one device and it was just a swap between the to?, is it connected to a usb hub in some kind?

This is my phone (a Xiaomi Mi 9 Lite) tethering to the router. Having this disconnected does not seem to make any difference, the logs were created from a point when it was connected.

Also, as some additional info here: when trying to scan and connect via LuCI Network → Wireless → Scan/Connect, I can successfully scan and connect with no issues (though the router does show a warning flag on the repeater, likely cus I bypassed some config, but that’s to be expected and goes away when I disconnect - just trying to help eliminate factors here)

hmm I think it must be some type of issue with your wireless settings (the power ones).

then it’s probably not related to your usb, but something else, is your wifi set on 160mhz perhaps?

Nope. 80mhz. Here’s the settings pages atm (second in next reply):

And as a note to skip some tests: switching to a/n/ac/ax and b/g/n/ax does not help here.

hmm can you try a lower channel by chance?

your channel has to support the country, but maybe a to high channel may also influence your dBm to a power level it cannot resist?

this is for 5ghz

No dice. Set both 2.4 and 5 to their lowest channel, just to be safe - there’s plenty going on on those channels - same issue.

the only thing I could think of is changing the wpa2/wpa3 mixed to wpa2 or wpa3.

edit: also it came to my attention you use the same ssid under 2.4ghz and 5ghz can you try to split them?, i’ve readed various messages about this causing a issue

if all of this not work, I’m out of idea too  maybe @alzhao can help

Switching to WPA/WPA2-PSK only on both APs didn’t make any difference.
I’m heading off for the night, but I’ll be able to troubleshoot more tomorrow. More than happy to full factory reset, switch to ethernet, apply custom firmware and SSH in to give info if required.

More info! Tried doing some downgrades and upgrades, each time opting not to keep settings and not changing any settings as I migrate around to give it the best chance of working.

I downgraded to 4.5.3, the function works perfectly with no crash and lists nearby networks.
Then upgrading to 4.5.4 this function still operates correctly.
After then upgrading back to 4.5.5, this function breaks. So it seems to be a bug in 4.5.5. I also noticed that on first setting up, repeater is automatically turned on on this firmware, though no clue what it’s connecting to.

The release notes list updated wifi firmware, so maybe it’s related to the firmware update. I’m going to stay on 4.5.4 for now, but if you need further tests I can check it.

Any word on this issue? @alzhao or others - the 4.5.4 firmware doesn’t auto-connect to USB tethering on connect, so I’d rather upgrade to a newer fixed firmware if I can, and am happy to help accelerate development wherever I can here

Scratch that, 4.5.6 is out! Gonna give it a go.

It’s no longer crashing the actual router, but I’m still getting repeated wifi drops on boot after a factory reset while it tries to auto-enable repeater and breaks as a result. A copy of the log is below.
In the meantime, I am rolling back to 4.5.4. Repeater works as intended here. If you need any more info, let me know.

My system has no issues normally with 80MHz, nor does the router, so not sure what’s going on. On 4.5.4 I have no such issues.

4.5.4 it’s more stable for me overall than 4.5.5 or 4.5.6

Hey! Any updates on this issue? It’s holding me back from latest f/w.

We are working on a MTK proprietory wifi driver firmware. Not sure if you want to try.

If me trying can help test this faster, feel free. I can test and then worst case uboot back. Happy to provide any kinds of logs/monitoring/etc, only caveat is right now all internet is through USB tethering, no ethernet based WAN. But I’m happy to test out whatever firmware to see if I run into the same crashes and run tests.

Use with caution. I didn’t test this by myself yet.

I wanted to give it a go but couldn’t get my PC to load the u-boot page, so I am unable to test with confidence, which is unfortunate. Got it booted into it but just couldn’t get the page to load. I will need to wait for a tested release, sorry. I really did want to give this a test
