I am newbie and just configured a VPN server on my GL-inet AX1800 ( in Toronto ), my friend in China used OpenVPN app as client side, the connection was good in the first try but the 2nd login got "Connection Timeout" error, looked like the VPN traffic was blocked by GFW, is there anyway we can avoid GFW ?

no, there is no good way to avoid the Chinese Great Firewall.
The FW uses different methods to detect VPN — if it works on the first time, it might get blocked later. So you can only try and try again ... mostly commercial VPNs will perform better because they can try more
