Performance metrics in Moonlight streaming app, worsened after upgrading

I just upgraded from a combined modem/router unit (Arris SGB8300) into individual components by installing a dedicated modem (Arris SB8200) and router (GL.iNet MT6000 Flint 2).

I mainly upgraded to get better streaming performance on the “Moonlight” app, but my performance has objectively worsened

Moonlight offers in-app metrics to measure network performance

I’m concerned with the variables:

  1. Frames dropped by network connection, which according to Moonlights github page they define as:

‘The percentage of frames that are sent from the host and don't successfully reach the client. It should stay very close to 0% most of the time.’

  1. Frames dropped due to network jitter, which they define as

‘It is typically caused by high network jitter but it can also be caused by hardware limitations or software issues (especially if very high)’

On my original modem+router setup these specific performance metrics were good:

Frames dropped by network connection was consistently close to zero

On my new setup, these numbers are quite high

Although not shown in the photo, I’ve seen frames dropped due to network connection going as high as 15%, and network jitter constantly fluctuating.

When I connect my device directly to the router, the connection is near flawless

What could be causing this deterioration in performance?

Are you connected on WiFi or Ethernet?

If you are on WiFi, are you in 2.4GHz or 5GHz?

If you are on ethernet, which port are you using (2.5Gbps or 1Gbps)?

What service are you running in your router (Adguard, VPN)?

Is the hardware acceleration On or Off?

Which firmare version are you using?

Are you connected on WiFi or Ethernet?

  • Wifi

If you are on WiFi, are you in 2.4GHz or 5GHz?

  • Host device (gaming PC) is connected to the 2.5ghz WAN Port on the MT-6000 router

  • Client device (Steam Deck OLED) is connected via wifi 5ghz

What service are you running in your router (Adguard, VPN)?

  • No services running currently

Is the hardware acceleration On or Off?

  • Hardware acceleration is enabled on the Host PC

  • Network acceleration is disabled in the admin menu of GL.iNet

Which firmare version are you using?

  • 4.7.0, I also tested on the last update (4.6.8) as I heard issues of a wifi bug in 4.7.0, performance still suffered nonetheless

First, enable the hardware acceleration on Flint 2

Test to see if there is any difference.

Then, keep the hardware acceleration enabled and change the ethernet port to one of those gigabit ports (instead of 2.5Gbps)

What is the distance between Flint 2 and the wireless client?

If there is any other router on the 5GHz, disable it.
