I'm looking to set up Storj on my TrueNAS behind my Slate AX which means opening a few ports.
I'm currently running OpenVPN client to an external provider.
My question is that when setting up my port forwarding rules do I still set the external zone to WAN even though I've got my VPN client running or do I set it to OpenVPN client? If I have to set it to OpenVPN client then are there implications for the external IP that I need to provide Storj? Finally if I did set it to WAN would this mean that incoming connections would bypass my VPN?
Generally if all your traffic goes through VPN, then you need to setup the port forwarding to your VPN interface. And you also need to set the port forwarding on your VPN server, some providers shall provide this feature but some may not, or you will need to pay more. After that, you can access your device with the VPN server's public IP address.
You can also setup the client devices to not to go through VPN. If so, just setup the port forwarding to the WAN interface on the router, and all the incoming and outcoming traffic would not go through VPN.
