Request: L2TP Server support on GL.iNet AX1800 for router-to-router connection

Hello GL.iNet team :waving_hand:

I would like to ask if there is any way to run an L2TP server on the GL.iNet AX1800 (Slate AX), similar to the built-in WireGuard and OpenVPN server features.

My main goal is not high-level security, but simply to connect two routers remotely and access / control my home network from another location.

Many routers such as Huawei and ZTE support only L2TP/IPSec or PPTP as VPN clients, and do not support WireGuard or OpenVPN, which makes direct router-to-router connection difficult.

Having an L2TP server on GL.iNet routers would:

Allow simple remote router-to-router connectivity

Enable home network access and management

Improve compatibility with Huawei / ZTE routers

Be useful even for users who only need basic tunneling (not strong encryption)

I understand that PPTP and L2TP are not the most secure protocols, but for my use case, ease of connection and compatibility are more important than strong security.

:small_blue_diamond: My questions:

1. Is it technically possible to add L2TP server support on AX1800 (OpenWrt-based firmware)?

2. Are there any plans to support L2TP/IPSec server in future GL.iNet firmware?

3. Is there any recommended workaround for connecting Huawei/ZTE routers to GL.iNet devices?

I kindly invite the GL.iNet development team to consider this request, as it would greatly help users who need simple remote access and home control.

Thank you for your time and for the great products.

Hi,

Please see our response below:

  1. From a technical perspective, it is possible to install an L2TP/IPSec server on the AX1800. While the stock firmware may have issues, native OpenWrt should work properly. You can refer to the following OpenWrt community guide for details:
  1. We have no plans to support L2TP/IPSec server or client functionality. As you mentioned, its security is relatively weak by modern standards, and cross-device compatibility can be problematic.

  2. We are not familiar with the specific capabilities of Huawei or ZTE routers, so we’re unable to provide recommendations for those devices. As alternatives, you may consider installing WireGuard on devices that require full traffic routing to your home network, or using Tailscale if you only need access to internal network resources.
