Router won't stay connected to my streaming device

GL-A1300 Slate Plus router

I have a Chromecast plugged in to my tv. I’ve connected the Chromecast to the router via wifi.

When I start watching a movie, it keeps disconnecting about every five minutes, to the point that it sometimes buffers and sometimes just stops the movie completely. I’ll cut and past some logs here, but I apologize ahead of time that I’m not sure where to start and stop as far as what to share.

I have no idea how to troubleshoot this. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance.

There are a few things you can try:

  • the easiest one is forgetting the network for the chromecast and re-enter it, some devices are buggy it is recommend to also avoid the use of wpa+wpa2 mixed or wpa3/wpa2 mixed cipher variants those mixed ones tend to break alot, you may choose wpa2 fully for the max device stability rather than wpa3.

  • you can go to advanced settings and visit luci and then go to network -> wireless and edit the band where you got issues with.

then proceed to click advanced settings and uncheck Disable Inactivity Polling

    Restart router afterwards.

  • for very old devices, and I only seem to see this on older nintendo consoles you may choose the legacy rate bands option in luci, this will make your wifi mega slow but this is also for very old devices generally.

Thanks so much. I’ve changed it to wpa2 rather than mixed cipher. I’ll try that and see how it goes.

Hi xize11, switching to wpa2 on its own didn’t solve it.

I’ve logged in to Luci for the first time; I don’t really know what I’m looking at. When you say to “edit the band” is there something in particular I should be editing under Network→ Wireless? I’m having the same issues with all bands.

When I click into one of the bands, Edit→Interface Configuration→ Advanced, the one thing that I thought might make sense would be to uncheck the box that says Disassociate On Low Acknowledgement. Allow AP mode to disconnect STAs based on low ACK condition.

Is there any potential downside to unchecking this box?

Disable inactivity polling was already unchecked.

I’m wondering if you have any other suggestions, or if anyone else would be willing to chime in here.

I tried to uncheck the Disassociate On Low Acknowledgement box, and the router seemed to be giving me a hard time about that. For instance, I unchecked it, the interface indicated to me that the router needed to be rebooted. I rebooted, and the box was still checked.

I’m open to the idea that there’s interference from other routers in the house, but I don’t know how to sort/troubleshoot that.

Otherwise, are there other GL.iNet models of router that are more stable?

Trying to watch a movie with interruptions every 5 minutes is not going to work. I really do want to support open source, but the product has to work. At this point I’ve lost two weekends to this project. I’m considering returning the router and getting another one, but it would be better if I didn’t have to.

you could try:

that checkbox can make your wifi very slow though, but for extremely old devices this can be recommended.

with the other one you can try downgrading to AC or N, again this will downgrade speed capabilities.

are you sure you use 2.4ghz and not 5ghz?, make sure width is not set to 40.

also another thingy is that when changing cipher encryptions, it is very usefull to forget the network on client devices because sometimes they will not acknowledge any new key and are basicly stuck.

what also can be a issue is the channel, if you use a app on Android like wifiman, or wifianalyzer you can find a better channel.

also a word about stream especially the iptv/igmp ones:

since wireless is half duplex, it will have troubles with multicast so in order to solve this, is to turn multicast into unicast.

this setting can be found under the advanced settings tab in wifi.

Excellent, thank you so much, I will try all of that and report back.

Hi there xize11, I want to thank you for all your help and suggestions and can report that the router is now working great! I’ve been able to get through multiple sessions of streaming for hours at a time with no problem.

I’m a bit embarrassed to say but I think what I needed to do was the very first suggestion you made, which was to have the Chromecast forget the network and then enter it again. I had made a very long password and so I was a bit lazy in skipping that step. I appreciated understanding why that makes a difference (the client not acknowledging the new key when changing encryption), and so I became more willing to do it.

I learned a lot from your answers and I’m up and running now, so thank you again!
