I'm still trying out the new Slate 7. And I'm wondering which Wi-Fi bands I should activate and how. First, I activated 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. Then I found the MLO function and now I'm only running the router in MLI Wi-Fi mode and have deactivated 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz again. Does this make sense, or should I activate all modes at the same time? I haven't found anything about this in the documentation.
You are right. I just wonder why the MLO is not implemented in the 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz setting. If I want that my devices use the best available connection I can give the 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz WiFi the same SSID and password. Is that the same like if I use MLO only? What happens if I use 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz and the MLO Wi-Fi with the same SSID? I just don't understand why MLO has a separate setup.
Because MLO (multi-link) is as the name suggests multiple links together - so it can't be seperated.
"Multi-Link Operation (MLO) is a key feature of Wi-Fi 7 that allows devices to connect to multiple frequency bands simultaneously (2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz) on a single network. This allows for increased throughput, reduced latency, and improved reliability compared to traditional Wi-Fi where devices typically connect to only one band at a time"
You can’t (yet) have both MLO + separate selectable bands because of how MLO unifies bands under a single SSID — and most routers don’t support dual SSID broadcasting (MLO + legacy split) at the same time on the same radios.
So effectively on newer devices it can aggregate diff bands for better performance i.e you're not connected to one or the other but actually both. However, that means legacy (non wifi 7 capable) devices will have a band auto-selected and aren't able to select manually
I just got my slate7 and I find their setup very confusing.
Yes I understand WiFi 7 and the boiler plate description but the layout chosen is odd.
As earlier mentioned by others, despite it being a bonded SSID with 2.4 and 5 if devices support it, there’s no settings for those respective frequencies. It makes it appear you must turn it on above MLO to access those settings. 160Mhz for 5Ghz for example.
I would like the interface updated.
Another good question someone had is, what happens when 5G and MLO have the same SSID?
I run Ubiquiti AP gear and MLO is an ‘option’ for a network, not a separate network.
