Slate 7 – Beta Firmware (4.7.2) Screen Frozen on Boot

I installed the beta firmware (4.7.2) for the Slate 7, but the display became frozen on the bootup screen and stayed there indefinitely. The device appeared to be working behind the scenes, but the screen itself never updated beyond the GL.iNet logo.

I tried using the Display Management feature in the web UI and rebooted the device multiple times—no change. The screen remained frozen, and it never turned off either, which may be a separate bug. Eventually, I reverted to the stable release to restore functionality.

Is this a known issue with the beta? Are there any details available on a newer beta version that might address this display problem? I’d like to continue testing newer firmware if this bug has been fixed or if a workaround exists. Let me know if there’s an updated build or ETA on the next beta push.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds potentially isolated to your device. Mine was fine.

Worked fine here. Would suggest a uboot reload....

Please use the 4.7.2-release2 firmware

Please upgrade to the v4.7.2 (2025-05-20) firmware:
https://dl.gl-inet.com/router/be3600/beta

So I can confirm 4.7.2 has an issue with the screen - it is indeed frozen. What wonders me most is the fact it worked initially (upgraded from 4.7.1 to 4.7.2 beta), but after some reboots, the screen is always stuck at the loading screen (green bar).

Downgrading to 4.7.1 fixes the issue. However, then getting back to 4.7.2 re-introduces the issue. But still, I do not know why it initially worked. I don't get it.

Can you upgrade the device to 4.7.2 beta firmware and then share the device with us through goodcloud for inspection? (You need to tell us the management password of this device)
goodcloud guide: Technical Support via GoodCloud - GL.iNet Router Docs 4

Is the version with the problem also 4.7.2_release2?
Can you reproduce this problem and share the device with us through goodcloud for remote inspection?
Or can you export the system log when the abnormality occurs and send it to us for analysis?

I definitely used the latest beta available (2025-05-20, 4.7.2), exactly the version posted before.

So what I can tell from testing yesterday, the problem is caused by one of the files which are also included in a backup file you can create in LuCi. Restoring the router to factory fixes the issue, but then restoring the backup will again cause the screen to freeze.

Right now I have to leave for work, when I’m back home I’ll try to trigger the issue again (probably in the screen setting or button setting) and then I can try to share the device with you guys.

OK.
If you have found the problem, could you please send us your configuration file for testing? (The administrative password for this configuration is also required)
It would be better if you could tell us in more detail what settings in the luci interface caused the screen problem.

I am also having issues with my Slate 7 when trying to install the kmod-nfnetlink-queue package it causes the device to reboot and then get stuck at 100% loading screen and won't move forward even after several hours. The device doesn't respond to 192.168.8.1 and it only seems to work after a full factory reset.

I just updated to firmware 4.7.2 release2. The screen freezes only when 'Security>Admin Panel > Force HTTPS' is turned on.

Thanks for report. We did reproduce this issue in my Slate7 with v4.7.2.
We are checking the codes.

Is this the reason why the beta firmware was removed from the official GL.iNet web site? Thanks

This is telling you that the router is in uboot failsafe mode. In this mode, you need to flash firmware according to the uboot guide.

Mine freezes on the loading screen(green bar) as well after trying to update all of the opkg packages

You cannot do this. It will break not only the screen but also everything. Please reset the router.

Alzhao, how are you? That's exactly what happened to me. I did the normal update to 4.7.2 and it solved the screen problem, but when I went to the plugins section, there were 42 updates. I ended up doing all of them, and after restarting the router, it crashed. I managed to solve it by resetting it via U-Boot.

I have a question, is it really necessary to do these plugin updates? Or should I ignore them?

Thanks

Well, reset does nothing, I unbricked my router via Uboot
