Slate 7 reboots/power drop when anything else plugged into powerbank

I have a Slate 7. I’m using it in hotels, coffee shops, and also mobile micronet (backpack network, car network, etc.). It works wonderfully in those environments, no complaints.

Except: Its power state is not reliable. I am using an Anker 165W 2500 mAh USB-C PD (with passthrough) powerbank as the power supply for my Slate 7. Any time anything changes with regard to USB power or power connection through the Anker powerbank, the Slate 7 instantly blanks out and reboots. Plug phone into the powerbank (or unplug a phone)? Slate 7 Reboot. Plug a USB-C PD+ wall charger into the powerbank to charge it / supply passthrough power (or unplug wall power)? Slate 7 Reboot.

After seeing other power-related Slate 7 issues here, I’m wondering, is this something that can be fixed in a firmware update? Is the Slate 7 responding incorrectly to USB bus PD negotiation messages?

That's normal because the Anker powerbank stops the power flow when something changes. After 1-2 seconds it will power up again - since your router does not have a battery it will lead to a restart.

You could try to use USB A instead, if your powerbank provides it.

I don’t believe the Anker powerbank stops power flow when something changes. Other devices (some without batteries) receive continuous power when another device is plugged into or removed from the powerbank. It most certainly does not stop for 1–2 seconds.

The powerbank does have USB-A output, but even with a USB A–to–USB C adapter, it won’t provide USB C PD to the Slate 7, correct?

This happens because the power bank switches off for a brief moment to renegotiate with the new device.

I have a feeling that Admon is correct.

I think you need a simultaneously charging / pass through charging power bank for this to work, and not reboot the router when something else is plugged in.

Yep, it does.

Most powerbanks (and USB C chargers) behave this way.

It’s how they negotiate their power outputs over the different interfaces.
