Slate ATX-1800 tor install fails silently

I bought a new Slate ATX-1800 about a week ago in order to create a link to my home network over a tor hidden service using an ssh jump host at home. I believe that the initial software was 4.6.11.
I did opkg update and then installed tor. The service would not run. I did various edits to the /etc/init.d/tor startup file and finally after two days, with the help of google gemini, got tor running. As the router management page was offering a new firmware version I decided to save all my edits and upgrade before going on to configure a wifi hotspot to access the home network. Hoping that all these problems would have been fixed.
The upgrade had the same problem with tor, but this time it was worse. Tor kept failing silently, whatever we did we couldn't get useful information in the logs. After another few hours with the help of Gemini we finally reached the point where the previous work-around would not run. Gemini mentioned that diagnostics would need to be more sophisticated and that this was a dead end, that perhaps some library was missing. I don't have an emulator available so couldn't progress any more. I reverted back to openwrt-axt1800-4.6.11-1216-1734278520.tar and got the previous workaround going again.
My request is if you could give images that actually work with the tor install package and service using opkg. I was using terminal login, so perhaps I have missed something basic, but gemini searches of the support website didn't come up with anything.
If there is some incompatibility there do seem to be workarounds to call the service on startup with the previous firmware, so as a secondary option these details should be available. I can provide the necessary /etc/init.d/tor details, directory permissions etc.
The reason I find it necessary to use tor is that most internet service providers don't give fixed ip address and they also block incoming connections, making it almost impossible to get an ssh link. So I like to have access to my home network over a hidden service when travelling - hence the reason for buying the ATX-1800. I am just asking that this package be tested during development of images.
