I set up mu router on USMobile for the first time in October. I noticed USMobile was able to differentiate the usage from the router as hotspot data rather than device data. This seriously limits the data cap and was wondering if there were programming options within the router to fix this or maybe this is just how it is supposed to work, and I need to find a carrier with unlimited hotspot data.
I can only send you down a rabbit hole, friend.
Check this out.. https://forum.gl-inet.com/t/change-outgoing-ttl/2096/83?page=5
Thank you moonshoes! A rabbit hole; it is. So from what I read TTL (Time to Live) is a value assigned to each IP packet that determines the maximum number of hops a packet can take through a network before being discarded. It is used to prevent packets from circulating indefinitely in a network loop, ensuring network stability. kennethrc says that carriers are looking for “TTL of 63 (or less?)” vs. any other TTL value to determine if you’re tethering as smartphones and hotspots add a hop so you end up presenting a TTL of 63 to the carrier, which then blocks/downgrades you.
So I assume when this parameter is not populated 64 is the default and the suggestion on the thread is to set it to 65 so the additional hop added by the router will then show 64 to the carrier.
Is this correct?
Do I need to read into the MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) parameter, which is the largest size of an IP packet (measured in bytes) that can be transmitted in a single network frame? It seems to be used to optimize network efficiency by limiting the size of packets to prevent fragmentation, which can increase network overhead and latency.
I think I can ignore this parameter.
And then there is the Device Parameter which refers to the specific device or equipment that is being configured. I see two entries discussed.
- "cdc-wdm0" typically refers to a USB serial device interface used for communication with a cellular modem, often an LTE modem.
- ttyUSB3 is another common interface used for serial communication, often associated with USB devices. In the context of LTE, it could refer to a specific serial port that your LTE modem is using to communicate with your system.
I think I can leave this parameter to the default as well.
Also note USMobile can be used with TMO, VzW or ATT. I currently have my number configured as TMO.
Also thanks to Google Gemini for helping with some of the definitions to fill in some blanks that I could not get from the thread I was pointed to.
If I got anything wrong or if ther is additional information that is needed, please let me know below.
Thanks
