Why does it needed?
I've noticed these on my Mango - I've always assumed they were "breakouts" - i.e. able to be popped out to install something like an external antenna if required. Possibly the case design was intended to be flexible, to cater for later product changes without expensive re-tooling.
I've got no direct knowledge, just a guess.
