Hi everybody, i work in a automation company without an IT internal department so we arrange how possible with a remote support for our customer.
Some years ago we bought enough device and we covered our product until today that we shipped the last box for a remote assistance. We bought the two devices in the object (AR150 and X300) where we installed the vpn services and used it has a bridge from us to our customer.
In those days i was looking for buying new boxes but i find out that they are out of production, so my question is: Which could be a good alternative?
We bought the shadow but when i'm going to try to install the vpn software trought ssh the device respond that there is no enough space. Unluckely we don't use the preinstalled vpn service so we have to install a different service.
Do you know if the rom inside the device is different? Right now i'm searching also a solution in some other forums.
I use Shadows for remote VPN severs and found the GL iNet 4.x firmware takes up most of the available space. You could down grade to 3.x firmware or move to generic Openwrt.
I am very happy running generic Openwrt 24.10 on Shadows, as there is plenty of space to load multiple VPN servers.
Uhm... So i can try to install the old firmware in order to keep also the gl.inet gui... I just have to figure out if it's worth wasting my time or if it's worth buying another model.
The newer GL iNet routers are significantly more expensive and noticeably larger than the Shadow. I’ve found the Shadow hardware to be excellent for a low-end VPN server. However, I’m disappointed that GL iNet’s 4.x firmware has become so bloated that it no longer fits on 16MB routers, if you need to add any other packages. It’s also frustrating that all their new models are considerably bigger.
Assuming you bought the 300M16 (EXT) then download this file here which is the uboot version for 3.216
Disconnect the power, hold down the reset button, reinsert power and hold the reset button until the LEDs goes solid then release the reset button . You're now in uboot mode. Set a wired device to static IP of 192.168.1.2 and you should hit the uboot menu at 192.168.1.1 where you can install the firmware. It'll reboot and you should be good to go, just remember to reset your device to DHCP or something n the 192.168.8.x subnet.
Hopefully 15 minutes at the most and hopefully then you can evaluate if the Shadow works for you
The GL firmware (v3.x and 4.x) pre-install the OpenVPN and WireGuard, they supported in the GL GUI. It did not require the user to manually install this VPN plugins.
