Suggestion about Mudi 7 (GL-E5800)

I just got my new GL-E5800 and the product is great. I have the following suggestions about the device UI (touch screen and WebUI):

  1. Some easy way to display the current WAN IP on different WAN interfaces (Cellular, Ethernet(if it is WAN), etc.) I did try but seems that there is not any.
  2. On the top status bar of device screen (where it display time, signal bar and battery level), can we have a small icon displaying current number of connected clients. Users can then easily know if any connected devices in any page of the screen.

Hi,

Thank you for your suggestion.
We’ll discuss it with our product team.

Could you further clarify the use cases for this requirement so we can better understand them?

  1. In portable scenarios (checking via the screen), what would be the typical use case for viewing the current WAN IP?
  2. Compared to simply tapping Power Button to return to the main page and checking the client count, what advantages does this approach offer?

For item #1, I have a very strict VPN access and controlled per IP, it would be easier for me if it is easier to know the actual WAN public IP so that I can verify the access. Currently, I need to connect to the Mudi, then use some external IP checking site like checkip.synology.com and then verify.

For item #2, I know there is a place to check on the main page. if we have a simple little icons, we do not need to go back and forth and easier to know how many clients are already connected at that particular time.

I also found one issues with the SMS. It seems that the on device page for checking SMS do not support Unicode. The message I got only display a service "*" (my SMS message is in Chinese) except those English text like an URL. I didn't check what will I got if I read it using WebUI as I deleted that message from device UI (as it is just a spam message). You may help to check on your side to see if my finding is what I see so far.

Thanks again for your help.

Thank you for clarifying the use case.

Regarding the Mudi 7 screen not displaying Chinese, unfortunately, this is expected—the screen is limited and can only display English.

Any chance to "upgrade" in software side to enable support of unicode SMS?

Another suggestion if we can have a page to automatic reset the data usage per SIM and it is configurable to reset on certain day of a month (say on 1st day of each month). I am using monthly plan and it will be nice to reset the data usage per month.

I think you meant to say “the software is limited and can only display English”?

Yes, the current software is limited and can only display English.

We’ve already discussed this with our development team to see whether Unicode support can be added in the future, which would allow displaying Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and other characters.

Regarding SIM card data usage monitoring and automatic reset functionality, we believe these features are already supported.

Good to know and I may overlook the settings.

Another suggestion to make the GL-E5800 the best device of its kind of all time:

  1. In Repeater Mode, Guest Networks should not be disabled. This never happened on the GL-E750.

  2. Add Multi-WAN support in Repeater Mode, allowing the router to connect to at least two wireless networks simultaneously (one radio per network, of course).

  3. Support for USB Wi-Fi dongles (such as the Fenvi AX1800) to expand the extremely limited STA + AP capabilities of the GL-E5800.

At the moment, when I install the MediaTek AX1800 driver packages, the USB dongle becomes unstable, and the GL.iNet UI layer clears the contents of the Wireless section. No wireless networks are broadcast anymore, making it impossible for my devices to connect. The only way to recover from this situation is to perform a full factory reset of the GL-E5800.

  1. Greater configuration freedom. Any settings configured through LuCI or the SSH terminal should not be overwritten by the GL.iNet UI layer.

I am starting to regret purchasing the GL-E5800, as it currently feels more like a simple Mi-Fi device than the powerful portable router that was advertised as being 100% customizable.

Hi

Thank you for your suggestions.

Please see our responses below:

  1. & 2. Due to hardware limitations of the E5800, it can support a maximum of two VAPs per radio at the same time. This means either 1 × STA (Repeater) + 1 × AP (Main SSID), or 2 × APs (Main SSID + Guest SSID). As a result, we have to enforce this limitation, and it may also prevent us from providing Multi-WAN on Wi-Fi support on this device.

  2. Unfortunately, we currently do not have any plans to support USB Wi-Fi dongles.

  3. Some of our GL.iNet-specific services automatically modify configurations based on settings made in the UI. If you do not need those features, you can try disabling the relevant services under /etc/init.d/. For example, for the Repeater feature:

    /etc/init.d/repeater stop

Well, that's pretty disappointing. Instead of making an investment, I ended up spending money on something that turned out to be a bad purchase.

I'm going back to using my mighty GL-E750. It doesn't have nearly as many restrictions as the GL-E5800.

What's the point of having such powerful hardware in the palm of my hand if it's so heavily restricted? That kind of defeats the whole purpose.
