Telit LM940 and MiFi

Hi all -

I was experimenting on the MiFi and I managed to acquire a Telit LM940 that had additional bands that I could use. However, when I put it into the router, it can only identify itself as “05c6:9008” and Qualcomm qcserial. When I put it into a Windows computer, everything works fine and it identifies itself as a Telit LM940.

The Telit Software Guide indicates that a kernel version of 4.10 is required for LM940, but looking at the commits, I was wondering if I would be able to get away with the 4.9 kernel that is included with the MiFi?

If not, does anyone know how to backport the commits needed or upgrade the kernel version?

Can you try 3.0 firmware from here ?
http://download.gl-inet.com/firmware/mifi/testing/

It should have higher kernels. But not sure if your modem is supported.

Show cat /sys/kernel/debug/usb/devices

It’s actually very interesting - I’m on 3.003-0929. When I plug the mini PCIe card into the board itself, it always gives me the wrong identifier - starts the LM940 in QDL mode. But I have a USB to mini PCIe adapter, and when I use that, it identifies itself correctly as a Telit LM940 and initializes properly as a modem.

Could there be something different in the way the board interacts with the card compared with the USB adapter?

Your device is switched in QDLOAD mode for some reason.

Yes - but only when it’s plugged directly into the MiFi board. When I use a mini PCIe to USB adapter and plug it into the MiFi via the USB port, it’s not in QDLOAD mode.

This telit is usb 3.0? If yes, try mask some pins (23, 25, 27, 29, 31, and 33) on edge: MC7455 breaks mini-pcie standard? - #2 by dl5162 - MC/EM Series - Sierra Wireless Forum

So, that seems to have fixed the problem (mostly). According to the hardware guide, this is indeed a USB 3.0 card!

After some trial and error (turns out I can’t mask the ground pins, the card refuses to work), the card does appear! But there’s a catch - when I reboot it, it goes back into QDL mode, and I have to use the GUI and click the “Modem Reset” button for it to actually reset and detect properly.

How does the “Modem Reset” button work? Is there a way I can have it automatically do that on startup?

(and then there’s the issue of the QMI driver not looking like it’s responding with the gl web interface - uqmi says that it connects and I can call --get-current-settings for the IP and DNS settings, but the gl web interface doesn’t want to read them, I guess? Nice thing though is that if I use 3g//dev/ttyUSB2, it works fine.)

@robxu9 did you ever get this worked out? What speeds were you getting from the LM940 ?
