Tethering to a second device

Hi team,

I cannot find any clear documentation on how to allow two devices to use tethering (not at the same time). I have one device connected and remembered and when I connect the second device the tethering panel in the UI says that no tethering device is connected. The second device is the same model as the one that works.

Can someone please explain for noobs whether (and how) the router can "remember" two tethered devices so that whether person 1 or person 2 connects their phone via USB, it will pick up the tethered connection.

I was looking into Interfaces in LuCi, but couldn't work out what was needed.

Thanks.

I would say: It can't because it does not remember devices.
It will use the tethered device as soon as the device plugged in supports tethering.

Just make sure that each device is in tethering mode.

Thanks, but my point was that after connecting one device (by clicking connect) it doesn’t allow a different device to connect.

You can't connect multiple devices the same time, if this is the question.

I’m not talking about at the same time. I am saying that the method used to tether phone 1 doesn’t appear for phone2.

That is. Connect phone 1 and it work. Unplug USB and replug and it reconnects fine. Unplug USB again. Connect different phone (but same model) with USB tethering enabled and Router dashboard UI says tethering device cannot be found.

The problem was not with the router, but with the device. Since Android 12, having USB debugging turned on whilst trying to tether causes incompatibility. The device had upgrades from Android 11, where it wasn't a problem to Android 12.
