Travel Router for Live Streaming

I am considering to buy a Router that I can use while traveling.

I plan to livestream games on Twitch occasionally so I need to ensure a somewhat proper connection. Thats why I looked into 5g capable eSIM router.

Another reason is protect myself from unsecure (hotel) wifis and let my devices just connect to my router (+ VPN).

I am currently considering the Puli AX (360-400€) but I am unsure if I even need that one.

Other ideas:

  • Wait for the recently announced Mudi 7? Even tho this one doesn’t come with antennas apparently - not sure if thats a deal breaker
  • Get a Slate 7 and a cheap 5g phone for mobile tethering.

TLDR:

  • Need a very good connection for live streaming games

  • Multiple devices

  • Should be able to connect to hotel Wi-Fi or act as a standalone router with mobile data. (5g)

  • Travel friendly (Backpack) - Might want to use it in other places besides my hotel room

  • VPN Support

And do I even need WiFi 7 for my use case? Or can I just connect my streaming pc to the router through ethernet and not worry about wifi6/wifi7.

Any help is appreciated, thanks alot guys!

Hi

It largely depends on how much portability you need.

Since you can connect your PC directly to the router using Ethernet, the LAN side should not pose any issues.

For the WAN side, the Puli AX includes removable external cellular and Wi-Fi antennas, which can offer better performance in weak-signal environments. You also have the flexibility to upgrade to third-party higher-gain antennas or use magnetic antennas with extension cables to position antennas near a window/outside for improved reception.

The Mudi 7 provides the highest portability, but its built-in antennas may not perform as strongly as those on the Puli AX. If you are confident that the areas you visit have reliable coverage, this may not be a concern.

Using a Slate 7 paired with a budget-friendly 5G phone is also common. However, this setup requires external power, such as a portable power bank. In addition, lower-cost 5G phones may have limited band support or weaker signal performance compared to the Mudi 7 or Puli AX.
