Travel router questions

Hello. I want to buy my first GL iNet device, but i want to clarify some points.
I travel a lot, so i want device from "mini router" group or "travel router" group. I want to know a few things:

  1. can any device from those connect to some WiFi (in a hotel, for example), and then provide the internet connection to my devices via WiFi and Ethernet simultaneously?
  2. can any device do what i said in #1, but also create a subnet - private network only for my devices?
  3. can i set up custom DNS server?

Thank you.

All of GL.iNet travel routers are meant to be fully capable of doing all of the above. The longstanding and very well publisised difficulty with a lot of them is actually in achieving the initial connection or link to the parent (e.g. hotel) WiFi network. There are a few workarounds and possible ways to circumvent some of these difficulties but none of which is completely foolproof. I have to say that with my extensive experience with various incarnations of these routers and travel, I have found the new line of MT3000 firmware and changes that involve open source WiFi drivers and newer OpenWrt kernel support and other repeater settings tweaks to have fortunately become much more reliable in negotiating a lot of these issues. I have also found the WiFi gain on the MT3000 to have been a bit more favourable and hence using this model as my preferred travel option. I still carry a tiny basic TP-Link travel router as a backup just in case.

Agree with @Lastimosa here. I have used many of the AR750S-EXT, AXT1800, and MT3000. I like the MT3000 the best so far as it is slightly smaller and lighter than the AXT1800. MT3000 would be preferable for Wireguard and AXT1800 would be preferable for OpenVPN (due to CPU differences affecting performance). I used it on a cruise ship lately, and while it was not super easy due to some potential bugs in previous firmware versions, it is working fine with 4.6.2 code since the trip.

This is exactly what I do with my GL-A1300. It works perfectly.
I connect it to hotel-WLAN open the captive-portal, log in and have my own network on 2,4GHz and 5GHz. Additionaly I connect a gateway by LAN.
