Troubleshooting intermittent connectivity issues with GL-X750 (EC25-AF)

Using GL-X750 (firmware 3.0.0.9) on VTEL Wireless, which is a local carrier that uses bands 4, 12, 17. SIM card is unlocked, there is a list of devices confirmed to work on the network & according to the technicians I spoke to there are no restrictions on connected, so long as they operate on the right bands, and some occasionally need the APN input manually. Put in the SIM card, took almost a day for the X750 to connect consistently, believe the catalyst was plugging it into the working router but even after that it’s not consistent- at first the router would take 10-15 minutes if not more to connect to the LTE network, or just not connect at all- the modem tab would sit with the abort button active, IMEI + modem name displayed and no LED active on the LTE display on the router despite the admin page showing several bars of service. Manually connected using the correct APN, once in every few tries it successfully connects (or needs more than 10 minutes to do so, I lost patience around that mark and would reset). When it successfully connects AT commands work but no device connected over wifi believes it has internet access & no data is moved up or down, until a device is plugged in via ethernet, at which point there’s about 30 seconds of inconsistent data transmission (packet drops, ping of about 1.2k) and data starts transmitting regularly, there’s nice consistent internet access over wifi… for an unknown length of time (usually under an hour) at which point any device connected via both ethernet and wifi start saying there’s no internet connectivity again. First time this happened I was unable to log into the router- the admin panel login screen would load partly- no graphics or formatting, just the password entry box, which would consistently time out. Today, after resetting the router & letting it run overnight it almost immediately connected to LTE but after booting up the device it was attached to, same issue- data sent from devices connected via wifi or ethernet- but I kept the admin panel open, which was perfectly responsive, showed consistent connection to LTE service & no change in IP address, I could change settings, access luci, and AT commands worked & responded with the correct information- but no connected device would show internet access or move any data up or down for about 5 minutes. After connecting to another wifi network I started to make this post & then noticed that I had access over ethernet again.

I’ve done my fair share of basic network troubleshooting but this one’s beyond my paygrade. If anyone has suggestions as to why this problem is so intermettent, or ideas or what data to gather the next time it goes down I’m all ears.

Update: X750 will now consistently connect to LTE service, has only lost connection once in the past 24 hours & quickly reconnected, so stability seems to be fine. Unfortunately it still will arbitrary stop sending and receiving data (though I can still log in to the router, service light remains on, and the modem shows no sign of an attempt to reconnect, there’s just no change to data use). Forgot to try ping tool in openWRT, going to try that and logread next time connectivity stops.

Log file from last night, connectivity was lost at between 19:40 and 19:45. Frankly speaking I don’t have the experience with networking devices or logfiles to make much headway here.

Are you in the US?

Is your x750 uses EC25-AF or EP06-A?

We may send you an firmware update so that you can check more info about band and carrier info.

Also what did you do before it connects? The first time seems it is very difficult to connect.

@luochongjun

I am in the US. I purchased the x750 with the EC-25AF, have not opened it up to confirm however. I did not see that the EP06-A was available for purchase through the store, just the EP06-E.

When I first received the router and could not connect I tried manually connecting, changed device to cdc-wdm0, usb0, usb2, and usb3 and manually entering the APN. I successfully connected once on wdm0 and usb2, but could not replicate that success, and when I got a consistent connection it was with usb3.

In case it is useful I’m attaching another part of the log from the day before the first log, when the router was up but no devices were connected to it. This basic pattern repeated until the previous log began.

Hello,
I placed a test firmware here.It can help us find problems.
Click Cells info in the modem page, you will see more modem information.

After flashing the router, same symptoms. Connected in a few seconds over /dev/ttyusb3, data transmitted for about half an hour, after that I lost connectivity for several minutes. During that time there was an error message “SIM not registered” displayed in the modem box.

EDIT: After looking through the forum this issue appears similar to the issue brought up: here. Slightly different symptoms but the same effect & modem. Ran the same AT commands, responses below in case they’re helpful:

AT+CREG?

+CREG: 0,0

OK

AT+QNWINFO

+QNWINFO: "FDD LTE","311990","LTE BAND 12",5145

OK

AT+CEREG?

+CEREG: 0,1

OK

AT + CGREG?
ERROR (response successful)

It seems that RSRQ parameters are particularly poor, in which case modems may not be able to register for the network, resulting in a lost connection.
You can see how good the signal is here

I captured those particular statistics during a period of stormy weather that reduced service. Over the past hour RSRQ has been between -7 and -10, during which there were still intermittent cutouts with the “SIM not registered” notification. When the next storm came through there were several spikes to -13 that did not correlate with any outage or packet loss.

In addition there is another device (Bandlux R560) using a SIM card on the same plan approximately 200ft away that has maintained a consistent connection with some ping spikes/packet loss during inclement weather. (I tested the x750 in the normal location of this router on the old firmware, no change in connectivity issues).

When I initially had issues with connectivity I took the x750 to a location with better service & encountered the same issue. Tomorrow I’ll test in an area with full service and the new firmware & report back.

Tested from the highest local point. GUI showed 4 bars of service, RSRQ varied between -8 and -14. Took much longer to connect than in normal location, exhibited the same random connectivity drops & “SIM not registered” message. While connected got speeds of about 500kB/s down, 150 up, above average for that time of day. 2x Bandlux R560 routers much lower in the valley maintained consistent connection at the same time.
