Turn GL-XE300C4 in a remote gateway to communicate with PLC

Hello,

OpenWrt = 22.03.4, r20123-38ccc47687
glinet firmware last = 4.3.27
GL-XE300C4

Is it possible to use this router with a SIM card to remote access in a PLC? I purchased this 4G router to leave it on site, connected via LAN cable to a PLC port. I'd like to be able to communicate with my Siemens PLC remotely form my office computer. I've found old posts on the forum, but none seem to work for my type of router.

Hi

This mainly depends on two scenarios:

  1. Whether your PLC and Siemens software support communication via a specified IP address, rather than relying on Layer 2 communication

  2. Whether you have a public IP address available to establish a VPN connection

If direct access PLC via the IP address is possible, we can do this by using a VPN:

If the X300 has a public IP address, you can set up a VPN server following the guide below and connect from the office:
Access WireGuard Client LAN from Server - GL.iNet Router Docs 4

If the office has the public IP address instead, you can set up the VPN server in the office and use the X300 as a client:
Access WireGuard Server LAN from Client via domain name - GL.iNet Router Docs 4
(you can ignore the domain-related parts and just ensure “Allow Remote Access LAN on Server” is enabled)
