Updating dnsmasq, taiscale and others

Team,

Is there a way to upgrade software modules like tailscale and dnsmasq - even if there is no firmware update that could make this happen?

I tried with opkg update and opkg upgrade <module-name> - which ended with no updates available. While the repositories behind the modules show several updates. The tailscale console states there is security issue and suggests upgrading to version 1.92..

Any suggestions?

With warm regards - Will

See above regarding tailscale, just a reminder the script is not officially supported

What is your reasoning for updating dnsmasq?

Never ever run opkg upgrade while using the official GL firmware.

The latest version makes dnssec validation working as expected.

Never ever run opkg upgrade while using the official GL firmware.

Or just OpenWRT in general

Yes - noticed some pointers in that direction… always use the upgrade image of OpenWrt.

The command opkg upgrade should only be used with specific packages - for example opkg upgrade tailscale.

fwiw, thee is no newer OpenWRT package for tailscale, even 25.12 is still only building the same version.

I’ve used the updater linked above in my case on both Brume 3 and Beryl 7 without issues and it does improve the tailnet DNS functionality with the later version. The search domain is set to the full tailnet domain and not just ‘ts.net’ so tailscale hostnames will resolve properly via the router without using the full FQDN after the upgrade.
