Are there any plans to release a new version of the router with a newer modem than the RM520GL or make the old ones upgradeable (the modem seems to be easily replaceable)?
They would then just need to adapt the software to support new modems. Integrating a newer modem into the router seems to work if you do it yourself.
It would be an absolute game changer if you could swap out the modem and the software supported it out of the box. (For example against an x75 modem or in the future an x80 modem). A real plus point would be if the modem could be sold as an upgrade kit in the store.
Along the same lines, I'd like to see an option to buy the cellular router without a modem (kind of like buying the modem test board only). That would give folks a platform to test with at a more affordable price.
Without the modem - wouldn't it just be a router, not a cellular router? And then if your modem is USB, why not just use any of the routers GL offers that allow USB modems? You don't need a special router for that use case, right?
From experience, having the router and then an external USB modem tends to get obnoxious very quickly, dealing with the 2 units, cables between them, extra setup steps. its really just a pain. even more so for traveling.
allowing and selling user upgrades of the internal modem would be amazing. extend service life, reduce waste and add value to the product. The X3000 is easily the best consumer/prosumer cellular router ive used. I hope this option is considered in the future.
Sorry for the late reply. Just to clarify - yes, I can connect a USB modem or cellphone to many of my gl-Inet routers. If the modem board is built in to the router, it makes things much easier and less cluttered. I have a couple of the GL-X750 and GL-X750v2 where I've swapped various modems. What I was suggesting is it would be nice if the GL-X3000 was offered without a modem for those who like to experiment...
I will add I am extremely happy with both the X750, X750v2 and the X3000. They all work great.
